"In 1998 maakte pianist Paul Bley samen met drummer Paul Motian en bassist Gary Peacock het album Not Two, Not One. Hun label ECM nam een jaar later in Italië een concert op, maar die liveregistratie bleef twintig jaar op de plank liggen. De opname verschijnt nu als When Will the Blues Leave. Het is het eerste postuum verschenen album van de in 2016 overleden Bley. When Will the Blues Leave is vernoemd naar een compositie van Ornette Coleman. Het is een plaat waarop het trio elkaar beter vindt dan op Not Two, Not One. Bley is niet de man van lange, lyrische melodielijnen; in het titelstuk ragt hij de melodie erdoor, om de bassist en de drummer het daarna samen te laten uitvechten. Geestig is de interactie aan het begin van Peacocks Moor. De bassist introduceert zijn nummer met prachtig pizzicatospel, een beetje pesterig tikt Motian op zijn hihat. Door ECM-baas Manfred Eicher geremixte heruitgave van 2 LP's uit 1961, met Giuffre (ts, cl), Paul Bley (p) en Steve Swallow (b). De evocatieve improvisaties, vol betekeniszwangere stiltes, is duidelijk een grote invloed op de latere ECM-sound.
