Live album, opgenomen in 1975 in Belgrado. Carmen Mercedes McRae (Harlem, New York, 8 april 1920 Beverly Hills, 10 november 1994) was een Amerikaanse jazzzangeres, componiste, pianiste en actrice. Ze behoorde tot de invloedrijkste jazz-vocalisten van de 20e eeuw. Haar interpretaties waren niet alleen zeer virtuoos, maar ook vaak ironisch. Met name door dat laatste is ze bekend geworden. Een bekende opname van haar is de vocale versie van het nummer Take Five van Dave Brubeck, met een tekst van Dave en Lola Brubeck. McRae werd naar eigen zeggen onder meer geïnspireerd door Billie Holiday. Ze trad op in de Verenigde Staten, Europa en Japan, en bracht meer dan 60 albums uit. (Muziekweb).
'This project is an unusual matchup between two very individual vocalists that generally works. Both Carmen McRae and Betty Carter show a lot of good humor during their duets, cracking occasional jokes and often jamming quite spontaneously. With suitable support from pianist Eric Gunnison, bassist Jim Hughart and drummer Winard Harper along with a very enthusiastic audience at San Francisco's Great American Music Hall, Carter usually takes vocal honors while McRae comes up with the most humorous lines. Some of the ensembles are ragged but this encounter is overall quite successful. The CD reissue adds three previously unreleased selections that feature McRae without Carter. Ook zijn er uitstapjes naar o.a. doo wop. La McRae brengt een klassiek vocaal jazzconcert, begeleid door pianotrio. Vele standards krijgen een doorleefde interpretatie waaruit doorwrocht begrip voor de teksten spreekt.

Carmen McRae's final recording finds the singer backed by the Shirley Horn Trio (unfortunately, Horn turned down McRae's request to sing a bit) on 13 numbers associated with Vaughn, plus Carroll Coates' original "Sarah." On such songs as ""Poor Butterfly," "Misty," "Tenderly," "I'll Be Seeing You," and even "Send in the Clowns," McRae brings back the spirit (and some of the phrasing) of Sarah Vaughan, while still sounding very much like herself. Opnamen uit de 2de helft van de jaren '50 van in 1994 op 74-jarige leeftijd overleden zangeres. Haar stem is warm en diep, de sfeer van haar interpretaties van American Songbook-materiaal 'cool' en uiterst precies. Doet niets onder voor Ella, Dinah en Sarah en heeft nog een pré: ze is ook een prima pianist, zoals hier in de twee slotnummers (live-opnamen uit 1957) goed te horen is. Verder zijn hier opnamen aanwezig met o.a. Billy Strayhorn (p), Ben Webster (ts), de orkesten van Jack Pleis en Ralph Burns.
"Yes, there's a concept on the loose here -- all the songs are about birds. Fortunately, there are plenty of good songs on the subject, and it's not so narrow that all the focus hinges on birds themselves. Carmen McRae is supported by a good small group, directed and arranged by Ralph Burns, featuring guitarist Mundell Lowe and many solos for an uncredited "tenorman" (i.e., Ben Webster). Both McRae and Webster do their best on the driving, horn-heavy score for "Bob White (Whatcha Gonna Swing Tonight)." First, Webster follows closely along with trumpeter Irwin "Marky" Markowitz while McRae vocalizes clearly and with some swing, then launches a beautiful solo before McRae returns for the closer. Other highlights include the touching "A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square" and a relaxed, pastoral "When the Swallows Come Back to Capistrano."" (John Bush, Allmusic)
Populair live-lbum dat de zangeres in blakende vorm laat horen. Het songmateriaal is fraai gekozen en anders dan de titel doet vermoeden niet slechts afkomstig uit de gebruikelijke ruif tijdloze musicalliedjes uit de jaren '30 (waar meestal met die term op gedoeld wordt). Ze zingt ook werk van Michel Legrand, Duke Ellington en toen vrij recent werk van Burt Bacharach. Ze trekt ze volledig naar zich toe met haar warme, volle stem.
