CD

Secret Combination ; Windsong (1982)

"Randy Crawford's fifth and sixth albums - "Secret Combination" (1981) and "Windsong" (1982) - are combined on this 2013 release from Edsel. The two CDs are combined with a substantive booklet featuring loads of recording information and notes -- ideal for listeners who don't want to settle for digital downloads. On these albums, she continued smartly blending jazzy pop, slick ballads, and earnest, anguished numbers. Among the singles that charted between these two albums are "When I Lose My Way," "Secret Combination," and "Nightline" (while "Rainy Night in Georgia" peaked within the Top 20 in the U.K.). There is a bonus track on each disc: a live version of "Street Life" (her hit single as a guest singer with The Crusaders) and an Al Jarreau duet, "Your Precious Love"." (Allmusic)

Raw Silk ; Now We May Begin (1980)

"Two of the better Randy Crawford albums, combined in one set. Where her second album "Miss Randy Crawford", with its Southern touch, could pass as an early-'70s release, Crawford's third album "Raw Silk" (1979) is relatively contemporary, graced with electric piano lines shared by Don Grusin and Leon Pendarvis. The up-tempo numbers are just as strong as the quiet storms -- an oft-neglected notion, given that many R&B fans instantly associate Crawford's solo work with her smooth ballads. The Crusaders produced Crawford's 1980 album "Now We May Begin". The song "Last Night At Danceland" was a hit, while the album cut "One Day I'll Fly Away" got widespread radio airplay and did well in the international market. Crawford's quivering delivery and eclectic nature has made it difficult for record companies to target and market her material; this was one of the few times she penetrated the urban contemporary and R&B markets." Nightline ; Abstract Emotions (1986)

"1983's "Nightline" offers a nice combination of jazzy, sophisticated ballads, a few harder-hitting numbers, and some heartache material. In her slippery, velvety tone, Randy Crawford blossoms on "Abstract Emotions" (1986), a diverse cast of songs, which includes jazz, dance, pop, and a little bit of boogie. She does nothing fancy or unique other than address these lyrically sound numbers with good old-fashioned singing. Crawford softly croons through the lead track "I'm Glad There Is You" accompanied by only a piano. She follows suit on songs like "Can We Bring It Back" and "Year After Year." They too are tranquil numbers that prey upon the tenderness of the heart. Her up-tempo numbers like "Keep Me Loving You" and "Elusive Boogie" expose Crawford's spirited side. Not flamboyant with her vocals, her mellow yet illuminating style is pleasing, as is the album's lyrical content. The 2 CDs have improved sound and are combined with a substantial booklet with recording information and liner notes." (Allmusic)

Feeling good

"Sample, toetsenist van The Crusaders, ontdekte Randy. Samen hadden ze successen met o.a. "Street Life".

(KS, Oor)

Everything Must Change ; Miss Randy Crawford (1977)

"Randy Crawford's first solo album, "Everything Must Change" (1976) was produced by Stewart Levine. Like the albums that followed, it's a virtual masterpiece; the studio was crawling with heavyweights, and Crawford always brings out the best in everyone involved. Her version of "I've Never Been to Me" bests Charlene's original, and even Dennis Edwards' emotional ordeal. The title track represents nearly five minutes of social drama, and she makes "I'm Easy," "I Had to See Him One More Time," and "Don't Let Me Down" so personal you think she's singing about you. Crawford's charming second album was produced by Bob Montgomery (a veteran hand with Bobby Goldsboro and Billy Sherrill), and some tracks undeniably have a slight country-ish/Southern soul feel to them. It's a perfect showcase for Crawford's interpretive skill. She makes the Don Henley/Glenn Frey song "Desperado" and the Mack Gordon/Harry Warren standard "At Last" equally her own. These albums were tasty precursors for what was to come." (Allmusic)
