"From their Mahavishnu/Devadip days, this recording features Larry Young on organ, Doug Rouch on bass, Armando Pereza on percussion and Billy Cobham on drums. There's some blazing guitar work, but the CD sounds like it was taped on a cassette deck from FM using automatic level control. There's little deep bass or high end above 5KHz or so and you can hear compression kick in all the time. If you can hear past that (and some flutter and phasiness and level irregularities) this is a valuable musical document of some powerful spiritually-driven music from two of the masters of electric guitar (and devotees of Sri Chinmoy, a creative spiritual "guru" who generated seemingly endless streams of poetry, art and music every day) during a period when both were "clean and sober" and channeling their music from a very Coltrane-like consciousness, exemplified by "A Love Supreme" and "Naima." Uit 1974. Meditatieve stukken uit de tijd dat beiden onder invloed stonden van Indiase goeroes. Spirituele zoektochten naar het hogere in elektrische fusionstijl, maar toch eigenlijk vrij ingetogen en transparant, met veel strijkers.
"In even witte outfits als op de hoes van hun magnifieke duoalbum "Love Devotion Surrender" (1973) betraden Carlos Santana en John McLaughlin in juli 2011 het podium in Montreux. Wat volgde, was een ruim 2 uur durend fusionfestijn, waarbij de twee gitaristen elkaar vriendelijk uitdaagden in composities van diverse jazz-, rock- en bluesgiganten. Zo klinken op deze DVD fraaie instrumentale uitvoeringen van "Stairway To Heaven" en Dylans "A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall", een oostrelende akoestische adaptatie van John Coltranes "Naima" en een zinderend "Black Satin" (Miles Davis). Behalve de twee gelauwerde gitaristen komen ook drumster Cindy Blackman Santana en basman Étienne M'Bappé behoorlijk op stoom. McLaughlin speelt ietwat slordig tijdens "Vuelta Abajo" - dat hij eerder opnam met de grensverleggende jazzdrummer Tony Williams - maar verder is zijn spel vaak net wat spannender dan dat van Santana, vooral tijdens de razende solo's in "Step It Up And Go"." Het idee om samen 'ns wat te doen ontstond eigenlijk min of meer voor de grap, maar het kwam er tóch van. In 1988 stelden de latinrockgitarist en de fusionsaxofonist een band samen, die deels uit leden van Santana's band bestonden en deels uit de fusionwereld kwamen. Met die achtkoppige fusionjazz-latinrock-band tourde men dat jaar de grote zomerfestivals langs, zo ook het Montreux-festival, waar deze twee uur lange opname is gemaakt.
Uit 2001. Laswell 'reconstrueert, mixt & vertaalt' de religieus bevlogen platen 'Illuminations' (met Alice Coltrane) en 'Love, Devotion & Surrender' (met John McLaughlin). Hij heeft de transcendente lading 'n meer ambienteske sfeer meegegeven.
