"Niemand anders kan op dit moment Lee Konitz mooier laten klinken dan Bill Frisell en Jakob Bro samen. "Judy Niemack is a gifted vocalist who moved to Europe to make her mark as a recording artist. Following a series of impressive releases for the now defunct Free Lance, she made this rewarding session for the German unit of Sony. Joined by an outstanding band that includes guitarist Jean Francois Prins (her husband), bassist Eddie Gomez, vibraphonist David Friedman, and percussionist Café, Niemack's wide-ranging choice of material and infectious voice keep things interesting, with many of the pieces having a "time" theme in their titles. She penned hopeful lyrics to Pat Metheny's "Talk Awhile" (originally titled "[It's Just] Talk") and delightfully scats in unison along with Prins and Friedman. Niemack's subtle arrangement of "Sometime Ago" is an object of beauty, while her playful side comes across in the sexy rendition of Cyndi Lauper's "Time After Time." "You dont have to be a hard core fan to recognize that Konitz at his best is a wonderfully inspired improviser, and these 54-55 recordings capture him in peak form. His phrasing, attack, and the beautiful flow of ideas will make believers out of any but those who just cant hear what hes after with that tone at all. The only problem I have with early Konitz is that his pianists-including demigod Lennie-often employed very predictable phrasing. Incongruously, these same pianists specialized as composers in pieces of spectacular rhythmic complexity. Much of Ronnie Balls playing here, and his excellent Ronnies Tune and Froggy Day, are offered in evidence. Lees No Splices and Ablution are also musical tongue twisters a la Tristano. Seven tracks feature Peter Ind and Jeff Morton, with Percy Heath and Al Levitt doing duty on three live tracks. Both bassists sound great, both drummers subsidiary". (Jazz Times)
De 5 nummers tellende LP uit 1961 met Sonny Dallas (b) & Elvin Jones (d) is uitgebreid tot 9 (CD1). CD2&3 bevatten sessies uit dezelfde tijd met Nick Stabulas ipv Jones die de vindingrijkheid en subtiliteit van z'n altsaxspel onderstrepen.
Lee Konitz: deze invloedrijke altsaxofonist was er bij, bij vele belangrijke ontwikkelingen in de jazzmuziek in de 20ste eeuw. Als 21-jarige speelde hij bijvoorbeeld mee bij de sessies voor "Birth Of The Cool" van Miles Davis. Een halve eeuw later was hij nog steeds actief en in vorm. Eind jaren '90 trad hij bijvoorbeeld op in de Enschedese Jazzclub De Tor, in 2012 nog weer op het North Sea Jazz Festival. We hebben hier derhalve te maken met een jazzmonument, een levend stuk jazzgeschiedenis. Dat maakt deze documentaire al op voorhand interessant. Deze documentaire is een mengeling van interviews, een registratie van een workshop en een duoconcert met pianist Harold Danko. In het interview bespreekt hij zijn ervaringen met legendarische collega's, in de workshop neemt hij door wat bijvoorbeeld de muziek van iemand als Louis Armstrong zo speciaal maakt, tijdens het concert speelt hij o.a. van hem bekend werk als "Stella By Starlight".
Plaat uit 2000 van de veteraan-altist, naast de uitstekende Marc Johnson (b), John Abercrombie (g) Joey Baron (d) vooral bijzonder door het lyrische samenspel met Ted Brown (ts): van Konitz' generatie en bijna nooit meer te horen.
"Het moet geweldig zijn geweest, die zaterdagnacht 27 september 1958 in het Concertgebouw. Er waren 2 toppianisten, Phineas Newborn en Red Garland. De tovenaar uit Memphis en de aardsere klavierleeuw uit Dallas. Newborn woonde stilistisch in hetzelfde blok als Bud Powell, Erroll Garner en Horace Silver. Hij heeft het briljante, zonder dat nadrukkelijke, van Oscar Peterson. Garland speelt elementairder, heeft minder noten nodig en als hij zijn argumenten kracht bij wil zetten, gebruikt hij blokakkoorden. Ook de blazers laten mooie contrasten horen. Altist Lee Konitz is cooler dan de meeste boppers uit die tijd. De warmbloediger Zoot Sims (ts) vormt een fraai contrast. Nochtans speelt hij een stuk lichter dan generatiegenoten als Lockjaw Davis of Sonny Rollins. Bassist Oscar Pettiford levert met 2 solo features, zijn eigen 'Bohemia After Dark' en 'Stardust', indrukwekkende voorbeelden van hoe je jazzbas moet spelen. "Motian is one of the most musical yet unorthodox performers ever to pick up sticks. Here he is joined by a very jazzy and eccentrically swinging Bill Frisell on guitar bouying up the plush gruffness of saxophonist Joe Lovano, and Charlie Haden's surefootedly adventurous basslines loping along beneath. Even more remarkable is the guest appearance of the Cool Jazz alto guru Lee Konitz. His contrapuntal improvising with Lovano on some of the shared theme-statements recalls the melodic resourcefulness of the altoist's 50s and 60s work with Warne Marsh; Frisell's sound-palette brings the music into a more contemporary frame. Konitz spins silvery threads on "Just One of Those Things", they all dance aimiably on the cheesy Latin swinger "Tico Tico", and Konitz plays the solo of the disc - against Motian's inventive drumming - on "The Way You Look Tonight". Without upstaging anybody else, Konitz does at times make this set sound as if it should be filed under K. It would count as one of his best." (The Guardian)
Komt in december in de Tor en is een levende tenorsax-legende. Op dit album wordt nauwkeurig gekozen Billie Holiday materiaal uit de jaren '30 en '40 uitgevoerd door een strijkersgroep. Een waardig eerbetoon aan Holiday.
"A beautiful little album from Lee Konitz -- one that seems to have even more sensitivity than usual, thanks to the presence of a string quartet! The sound here is quite unusual -- a mix of small combo jazz with slight added strings -- in a way that's hardly like any "with strings" jazz recording of previous decades, and which instead has the added instruments nicely ingrained in the overall feel of the set. Given that the arrangements here are done by Axel Hagen, the guitarist in the group, there's often a rhythmic quality to the string work -- supported by Hagen's own guitar, which is a bit like Billy Bauer at times -- setting the stage nicely for Lee's always-sharp work on alto and soprano sax, plus tenor and flute from Marco Kegel.
