"Rubén Blades Bellido de Luna (Panama-Stad, 1948) is een Panamees zanger, songschrijver, acteur en activist. Zijn muziek bevindt zich in de genres salsa en latin jazz. Hij maakt naar eigen zeggen dansmuziek voor intellectuelen en is vooral in Spaanstalige landen populair. Sinds 2015 speelt Blades in de serie Fear the Walking Dead; datzelfde jaar nam hij een Latin Grammy-award in ontvangst voor zijn album Tangos. In 2018 verschenen de documentaire Yo no llamo Rubén Blades (Rubén Blades is not my name) en het live-album Una Noche Con Rubén Blades. Naast salsanummers werden er ook jazzklassiekers vertolkt. Op 15 juli 2018 kwam Blades naar het North Sea Jazz Festival met de bigband van Roberto Delgado. Op 16 mei 2019 ontving Blades in New York de Dorothy Height-award. Colón kept only three arranging assignments for himself, which makes it sound less like a Willie Colón record (and is probably why it's remembered slightly less fondly than its bookends). Luis Ortiz's two excellent charts included one that sounded a much different note than Colón (the opener "Pablo Pueblo") as well as another that sounded as though Colón were writing it himself ("La Maleta"). Colón bolstered his strong brass lineup with additional power (including a tuba solo on the opener), and the lineup is a powerhouse (including frequent collaborator Yomo Toro on two tracks). Meanwhile, Blades proved his range, moving from raging first-person narratives to pastoral boleros -- with no lack of passion on each -- and although Colón is heard less here than on his previous classics, his lieutenants proved the confidence he had in them." Considering that Blades has made a career out of musical globetrotting, that's quite a statement. However, with virtually every track choosing a different Latin American or Caribbean nation as it's home, it's quite justified. From merengue to samba to West Indies funk to the salsa that made him famous, Blades never seems to find home, he's as full of wanderlust as the ships that grace the album's cover. Often times when a musician attempts such an epic project, instead of playing one style well, all come out mediocre.
