Cline can move from spacey ambience to raging leads to swirls of electronic-sounding madness and beyond. Pairing them seems like a great match on paper but the result is even better. Perhaps the most amazing thing is just how well Cline fits in with MMW's modus operandi. They've got a unique group dynamic in that there isn't a leader. They intuitively know when to step forward and when to sit back, each one pushing the dynamic or supporting as needed. These guys are sonic explorers and over this course they go just about everywhere: electronic ambient, soul jazz, rock freakouts, '50s sci-fi, mysterious exotica, and even a little taste of New Orleans." Nels Cline is anno 2011 vooral bekend als de uiterst creatieve gitarist van de avant-rockgroep Wilco, waar hij sinds 2004 deel van uitmaakt. De in 1956 geboren Cline had toen al een hele carrière in de progressieve jazzmuziek achter de rug. Nadat hij deel uit had gemaakt van o.a. de 'modern creative'-groep Quartet Music maakte hij in 1988 zijn debuut als groepsleider met dit album, waarop leden van Quartet Music meespelen, naast o.a. saxofonist Tim Berne. De spelstijl die hij bij Wilco laat horen zult u hier niet aantreffen; na een vrij traditioneel aandoend jazzgitaargeluid in opener "Angel Of Death" is hij wisselend te horen op akoestisch en elektrisch. Soms zijn de stukken melodisch, andere momenten zijn meer onderzoekend en impressionistisch van aard; veelal met een relatief ingehouden karakter. Achteraf interessant om te horen wat voor weg deze man heeft afgelegd.
