In Japan opgenomen smoothjazz-album van de trompettist, omringd door een all-star-veteranenritmesectie: pianist Hank Jones, bassist Eddie Gomez en drummer Jimmie Cobb. Het geheel wordt bijgestaan door een strijkorkest o.l.v. Masahiko Satoh. De groep speelt een reeks ballads, meest standards, die door de strijkersarrangementen extra 'smooth' zijn gemaakt.
Gerry Mulligan (1927-1996) maakte begin jaren '50 legendarische opnamen met Chet Baker, maar dat was niet de enige grote trompettist die in het kwartet van de baritonsaxofonist glorieerde. Tussen medio 1957 en medio 1959 maakte Art Farmer soms deel uit van Mulligans pianoloze kwartet. Veel is er niet van vastgelegd en deze Italiaanse TV-opname uit 1959 is dan ook een welkome aanvulling. Niet alleen wordt er prachtige hardbop gespeeld (een mengeling van originals en standards), het is ook schitterend om te zien. Natuurlijk, de beelden zijn niet naar huidige digitale maatstaven, maar artistiek van hoge kwaliteit. De cameramannen leggen perfect het genot vast dat de heren, en vooral Mulligan, uitstralen tijdens hun spel. Daarbij komt, dat het kwartet speelt voor een hoge muur en er spots onder de musici voor het podium zijn geplaatst. Gevolg is een fascinerend schaduwspel op de muur, waar regelmatig op gefocust wordt. Daarbij bevat de DVD vrijwel het gehele concert (van de toegift is alleen de audio vastgelegd).
"Four different American trumpeters sit in separately with a trio led by pianist Louis Van Dijk during sessions recorded between 1970 and 1975 for radio broadcast in Holland. Gillespie alternates between muted and open horn in a superb take of "Autumn Leaves" and introduces the trio to his spirited blues "Quickly Home," which is powered by the crisp brushwork of drummer John Engels. Thad Jones covers "Deep Purple" and "Yours Is My Heart Alone," two once popular but now faded numbers, beautifully interpreted by Jones and extends over ten minutes. During his 1972 session, Art Farmer is heard on flügelhorn, his instrument of choice at the time; Farmer's soft yet elegant takes of "A Sleeping Bee" and "Some Other Time" emphasize his lyrical playing. Conte Candoli, who recorded rather sporadically as a leader, lets sparks fly with a driving interpretation of "On Green Dolphin Street" and a swinging take of the old chestnut "S'posin'," showing the influence of Gillespie. "During 1955, trumpeter Art Farmer had a short-lived quintet with altoist Gigi Gryce, but because neither of the co-leaders were big names at the time, the band did not last long. Fortunately, they did record two albums of material, of which this CD reissue (originally known as "Evening in Casablanca") was the second. In addition to Farmer and Gryce, the unit includes pianist Duke Jordan, bassist Addison Farmer, and drummer Philly Joe Jones. With the exception of Duke Jordan's "Forecast," the cool-toned hard bop date consists entirely of Gryce compositions, of which "Evening in Casablanca" and "Nice's Tempo" are best known. "After the Jazztet that he co-led with tenor-saxophonist Benny Golson broke up, flugelhornist Art Farmer led a pianoless quartet during 1963-64 with guitarist Jim Hall. For this live recording, Farmer and Hall are joined by bassist Steve Swallow and drummer Walter Perkins. Their repertoire is a bit surprising since four of the five songs were veteran swing standards; all but Miles Davis's obscure "Swing Spring." Hall (who has "I'm Gettin' Sentimental over You" as his feature) was a perfect musical partner for Farmer since both musicians have mellow sounds and thoughtful improvising styles that are more complex than expected. "For a brief time, tenor saxophonist Clifford Jordan and trumpeter Art Farmer were the frontline of the Horace Silver Quintet. This 1997 CD reissue finds the group (which also includes bassist Teddy Kotick and drummer Louis Hayes) performing five of Silver's lesser-known originals and the standard "Ill Wind." The lyrical Farmer and the up-and-coming Jordan have plenty of fine solos, as does the influential Silver, whose funky, witty style stood apart from the prevailing Bud Powell influence of the era. Although none of the newer songs caught on as standards, this set (which has plenty of mood and groove variation) holds together very well and still sounds fresh 40 years later."
