"In early 1963, Davis formed a new band, which included George Coleman (ts) and Ron Carter (b). When Davis entered the studio, he added drummer Frank Butler and British studio ace Victor Feldman, who ultimately decided not to go on with Davis. It's easy to see why Davis liked Feldman, who contributed the dancing title tune and "Joshua": the pianist plays with an elegant, refined touch and the kind of rarefied voicings that suggest Ahmad Jamal. Davis responds with some of his most introspective, romantic ballad playing. When Davis returned to New York, he spotted the brilliantly gifted 17-year-old drummer Tony Williams. On the title tune you can already hear the difference, as his crisp, driving cymbal beat and jittery, aggressive syncopations propel Davis into the upper reaches of his horn. On "So Near, So Far" the drummer combines with Carter and new pianist Herbie Hancock to expand on a light Afro-Cuban beat with a series of telepathic changes in tempo, texture, and dynamics." Het nummer Milestones van het album Milestones wordt ook gespeeld. Voor het overige heeft de setlist weinig van doen met dit legendarische album. Toch zeker een aanrader voor de fans van Miles. "Culled from the archives of the Left Bank Jazz Society, this 2CD set captures organist Shirley Scott in a fiery 1972 performance. She handles both keyboard and bass duties, deftly laying down bass grooves via the Hammond B-3 foot pedals. Throughout, her playing is boldly harmonic and rhythmically assured, marked by thick chordal blasts. Scott, drummer Bobby Durham and tenor saxophonist George Coleman (ex-Miles Davis Quintet) tackle an inspired mix of standards and reworked contemporary hits, including a driving version of Coltrane's "Impressions" in which Scott matches Coleman's edgy note choices. They also dig into soulful readings of Jimmy Webb's "By the Time I Get to Phoenix" and Gloria Gaynor's "Never Can Say Goodbye", making the strong case that jazz musicians often sound the best when they put their own twist on unexpected pop tunes. Tenorsaxofonist George Coleman (1935) zal wel altijd geassocieerd blijven met Miles Davis, al speelde hij maar kort bij de trompettist. Hij was de oorspronkelijke tenorsaxofonist in diens beroemde sixtieskwintet, maar is maar op één studio-album te horen, "Seven Steps To Heaven" (1963). Hij werd al snel vervangen door Wayne Shorter. Dat dit nauwelijks aan 's mans muzikale kwaliteiten gelegen kan hebben, bewijst vooral de tweede CD van deze koppeling. Dit "Blues Inside Out" werd in 1995 live opgenomen in de beroemde Londense jazzclub van Ronnie Scott en laat uiterst vitale en spannende jazz horen. Het kwintet, met o.a. altsaxofonist Peter King en pianist Julian Joseph verkent de tegen freejazz aanhangende zone van postbop, een gebied dat in de eerste helft van de jaren 60 betreden werd, maar dat 2 decennia later nog steeds frisse resultaten oplevert. De eerste CD, eerder los uitgegeven als "Playing Changes" is in dezelfde club opgenomen in 1979 en laat bedaardere bop horen, meer in eind-jarenvijftig-stramien.
"This 1963 date is from the period when Miles Davis was still assembling his great mid-'60s quintet. For this intense, high-energy recording, four-fifths of that group are already in place. George Coleman is the saxophonist and he is in blistering form. A fiery, linear player, with impeccable, advanced hard bop instincts, Coleman helps push these performances from the standard Davis repertoire to an unprecedented level of deconstructed abstraction that would become even more pronounced in the coming years. It is the trumpeter, though -- all impertinent blats, rubbery smears of sound, and unexpected shifts in dynamics -- who leads the push here toward the cool, impressionistic, wholly original, cerebral funk that would emerge once Shorter was in the group. Ron Carter (b) and Tony Williams (d) at this point have already set the new rhythm section standard they would maintain with Davis. "Recorded off the soundboard during a four-night stand in April of 2006, Hammond B-3 boss DeFrancesco laid it down with saxophonist Coleman sitting in with his trio (which also includes guitarist Jake Langley and drummer Byron Landham). The raw and genuine excitement of these cuts is not diminished a bit by editing. In "Cherokee", Coleman's on fire yet fluid, wrapping the notes around the time signature and being on the dime throughout his solo. DeFrancesco's own solo is one of those rather amazing things that, 50 years after Jimmy Smith, you still can't wrap your head around: that this lightning-quick playing can be done on a Hammond! A long read of Lee Morgan's gorgeous "Ceora" is next, with DeFrancesco filling the pockets during Coleman's fine and empathetic solo, which engages the melody while simultaneously reinventing it. "Pianist James Williams picked three of the top tenor players of the 1990s (Joe Henderson, George Coleman and Billy Pierce) to participate in a jam session-type set. The sextet (with bassist James Genus and drummer Tony Reedus) performs six selections, all but one of which are over 9 minutes long. Each of the saxophonists have plenty of solo space and many chances to trade off. The material is generally pretty basic, with two blues, a runthrough on rhythm changes, the folk song "Calgary" and a pair of standards being performed. The tenors are quite aware of each other's presence so the playing is of a consistently high quality even if no real explosions occur. An enjoyable set." (Allmusic)
"Na Meditations, een plaat met pianist Tete Montoliu, brengt Coleman in 1979 eindelijk een eigen klassieker uit: Amsterdam After Dark. Het is een plaat die barst van de energie, de grote reikwijdte van Colemans spel laat horen en precies zijn positie tussen de modernen en de traditie weergeeft. In het openende titelnummer is bijvoorbeeld een duidelijke verwantschap met A Love Supreme van John Coltrane te horen, maar hoewel Colemans spel inmiddels toch hier en daar de invloed van freejazz draagt is het qua sfeer een totaal andere plaat. Zoals Coleman breeduit lachend op de in de Nederlandse hoofdstad gekiekte hoesfoto staat, zo ademt Amsterdam After Dark rrn opvallend gemoedelijke en optimistische stemming. (...) Op Amsterdam After Dark vindt Coleman de vorm en de stijl die hem het beste past. Hij speelde het liefst met een kwartet, zei hij eens, een bezetting die ruimte biedt om datgene te ontplooien wat Coleman zijn leven lang het meest fascineert: de melodie". (Jazzism)
