"Deze kwartet/kwintetplaat zal de wat avontuurlijker ingestelde mainstreamliefhebber zeker aanspreken. De groep die saxofonist Jon Irabagon hier ten tonele voert, is zijn working band en dat is eraan af te horen. Het viertal speelt fijne postbop waar de spetters vanaf vliegen. Op een drietal stukken komt gasttrompettist Tom Harrell laten horen wat een groot lyricus hij nog steeds is, zelfs in een uptempo-stuk als "Obelisk". Irabagon, die vooral tenor speelt, doet dat met een enorme autoriteit en dadendrang zonder dat dit leidt tot macho imponeergedrag, overigens. Wie Irabagon kent van Mostly Other People Do The Killing, zal dit allemaal niet zo vreemd voorkomen. Op sopraan klinkt hij ook vol, romig en overtuigend, hetgeen vooral opvalt in het duo met pianist Luis Perdomo, "Lost Ship At The Edge Of The Sea". De compositie, net als alle stukken op het album door de leider geschreven, klinkt als een standard, en dat zegt iets over de compositorische kwaliteiten van Irabagon." (Herman te Loo, Jazzflits)
De naam van pianist Horace Silver zal vooral altijd gekoppeld blijven aan de albums die hij eind jaren '50 en begin jaren '60 maakte, en aan "Song For My Father" in het bijzonder. In een tijdvak dat veel generatiegenoten óf het niet meer wisten (en hun gouwe ouwen bleven herkauwen) óf mee waren gegaan in de populaire stromingen souljazz en jazzrock bleef hij spannende jazz maken die modern klonk, voortbouwde op de traditie en geen commerciële knieval doet naar de populaire waan van de dag. Ten minste, als we moeten afgaan op dit fijne concert uit 1976, met twee relatief jonge solisten in z'n groep die pas later alombekend zouden worden: trompettist Tom Harrell en saxofonist Bob Berg. Berg klinkt vaak intenser dan we 'm later ooit gehoord hebben, Harrell speelt beheerst en smaakvol. En natuurlijk trekt Silver ook de nodige soli naar zich toe, zoals in, ja ja, de te verwachten afsluiter "Song For My Father".

"Relatively secure in his idiosyncrasies after nearly 50 years as a pro, Tom Harrell remains a player resolute in resisting complacency. Each of his earlier 8 albums for HighNote has touched on different facets of his broad-based interest in improvised music. "Something Gold, Something Blue" dusts off an album conceit from early in Harrells career by teaming his singular brass with another avatar of the instrument. Back in 1979 his tandem partner was John McNeil. Here its trumpet prodigy Ambrose Akinmusire, 36 years Harrells junior, but every bit as up to the mutually-gratifying prospect of locking horns. The rest of the band is worthy of Harrells usual caliber of collaborators. Guitarist Charles Altura bridges bop dexterity with an inventory of judiciously incorporated effects. Bassist Ugonna Okegwo and drummer Johnathan Blake regularly find that sweet spot between responsive support and assertive prominence that caters beautifully to Harrells varied compositional needs." "Sheila Jordan could have given all her albums that title - little singing is exactly what she does, and it is elusive and intriguing. The 75 year-old Detroit-born singer's languorous scat-singing, immaculate timing, care with words and ironic intelligence suggests an infectiously optimistic artist with an enduring relish for her work. This album is largely composed of Broadway standards, but is bookended by a splice of Jordan's own whoopy, native American-derived Little Song and Lennon and McCartney's Blackbird, and includes one piece by her immensely skilful pianist, Steve Kuhn. "As the greatest musical heir on alto sax to Charlie Parker, it seemed only natural for Phil Woods to record a date with Dizzy Gillespie. This European studio session features Dizzy as a special guest sitting in with one of Woods' greatest quintets, with pianist Hal Galper and the brilliant trumpeter and flugelhornist Tom Harrell. In fact Dizzy's chops had already slipped somewhat during the decade and Harrell clearly outplays him even though he clearly isn't trying to embarrass the legendary trumpeter. Gillespie is at his best with a muted solo on "'Round Midnight," while Woods, Harrell and Galper are all outstanding throughout the entire CD." (Ken Dryden, Allmusic)
"This is the fifth and final release by the George Robert/Tom Harrell Quintet, taped during a pair of Swiss concerts in 1992. As in previous outings, the alto saxophonist and trumpeter/flüegelhornist are in top form and each musician also contributed strong originals as well; the potent rhythm section includes the underrated pianist Dado Moroni, bassist Reggie Johnson, and drummer Byron Landham. Harrell's snappy post-bop strut "Streets" features his flüegelhorn, plus fines solos by Robert and Johnson. An extended version of "Sail Away," an emotional driving samba that is also one of Harrell's best known compositions, is another highlight. Robert's rich ballad "Softly" also has a Latin feel to it, while his hard bop "Cape Verde" is clearly inspired by Horace Silver. The only work not composed by either co-leader is "Morning Star," by Rodgers Grant; this highly enjoyable work features an extensive solo by Moroni. The Robert/Harrell Quintet knew how to go out on top!" (Allmusic)
