The Dreamers play Masada Book Two: Ipos: The Book Of Angels, Volume 14 (2010)

"Holy hell, what an amazing sextet of players! The dynamic sextet featured in two of Zorn's most recent and popular musical projects (The Dreamers and O'o) jump another level in "Ipos", their most beautiful and powerful recording to date. Featuring ten new compositions from the lyrical "Book of Angels", the music draws exotica, surf, world music, latin jazz, rock, film music and more into a seductive new musical world. Perfect for the early morning, late at night, at home or in the car, The Dreamers play Masada is truly a magical combination. Powerful new music performed by an all-star band of downtown masters." Streams (2016)

Tangents

Tangents (2017)

Some of Gary Peacocks finest music has been made in piano trios. Early in his musical life, Peacock established a fresh role for the bass as an independent melodic voice, a concept carried forward in the history-making groups hes played with from Paul Bleys Bill Evanss trios to Keith Jarretts. As a bandleader he has also been influential: "Tangents" is the second release from the great bassists trio with Marc Copland and Joey Baron and draws on years of shared playing in diverse contexts. All three contribute compositions, Peacocks including December Greenwings, revisiting a piece "December Poems" (1979). Repertoire includes 5 tunes from Peacock, 2 from Baron, one from Copland, and an outstanding group improvisation, Empty Forest. The trio also plays Miles Daviss Blue In Green and, perhaps surprisingly, Alex Norths theme for the film Spartacus, which also proves a fine vehicle for improvising. Tangents was recorded in Lugano in May 2016, and produced by Manfred Eicher. (bron: ECM/Challenge)

Up And Coming (2017)

Guitarist John Abercrombie who has recorded for ECM since 1974 returns with a second album by his quartet featuring Marc Copland on piano, along with longtime rhythm partners Drew Gress and Joey Baron. Extolling "39 Steps" (2013), the Financial Times said: The emphasis is on subtle intrigue, flowing lyricism and the interplay between the leaders warm, cleanly articulated guitar and Coplands piano… with bassist Gress and drummer Baron equally supple and sinewy companions. The same virtues of lyrical melody and harmonic/rhythmic subtlety are apparent with the new Up and Coming, though with even more emphasis on the enduring values of song. Abercrombies liquid phrasing and glowing tone enabled by the thumb technique he has honed since eschewing a plectrum in recent years animate his five originals and the pair by Copland, as well as a take on the Miles Davis classic Nardis done in the spirit of Bill Evans. "Up And Coming" has a twilight atmosphere, with melodic flow the guiding light. (bron: ECM)

Ne Me Quitte Pas

Ne Me Quitte Pas (1986)

'A supple, driving rhythm section featuring pianist Fred Hersch, bassist Marc Johnson, and drummer Joey Baron gives Thielemans sufficient support to float his mastery at will. He pleads, prods and probes, begs, borrows and steals on the gentle, bittersweet title track by Jacques Brel. Here, as well as on "Blue 'n Green which pleasingly morphs into "All Blues, as on the original Miles Davis classicHersch vividly demonstrates the "harmonic and pianistic colors that so appeals to Thielemans. Baron is a chameleon who feels comfortable under the skin of many a rhythmic style, but he performs best when he rides and drops bombs during a fast scorcher, like the double-time section of "All Blues. Styles associated with Scott LaFaro, George Mraz, and Eddie Gomez all show up in Marc Johnson's playing, with some Sam Jones-like bippity Bong Dong ba-di-ba-de Ong bong for good measure. Johnson's synthesis is refreshing'. (www.allaboutjazz.com).

Once Around The Room : A Tribute To Paul Motian (2022)

"The double basses of Larry Grenadier and Thomas Morgan initiate the conversation. Then the scattered insistence of rhythm by drummers Joey Baron and Jorge Rossy enters, pushing Once Around the Room into consciousness with all the anticipation and hushed intent of an orchestra tuning before a performance. Airy clusters of guitar courtesy of Jakob Bro and electric bassist Anders Christensen introduce Joe Lovano's aching call summoning the spirit to make known "As It Should Be," the first of the saxophonist's two deeply realized compositions. It's a protean, trance inducing twelve-tone that swells out into Once Around the Room's larger hypnotic narrative. Acolytes all of the late Paul Motian, Bro, who made his ECM debut on the drummer's Garden of Eden (ECM, 2006) and Lovano, who goes back nearly four decades with Motian's many creative iterations, lead this album a meditative investigation of the collective soul. The common voice we all speak in if only we'd bother to listen to one another." (allaboutjazz)
