"Mel Tormé (1925-1999) is in typically fine form on this 1992 Concord set; the problem is his musical partner Cleo Laine. Although often classified as a jazz singer, Laine, who has a tremendous range and a lovely voice, seems incapable of improvising. Backed by a 12-piece group led by Laine's husband John Dankworth, the duo perform a variety of mostly superior standards, but nothing unexpected happens -- except for a somewhat disastrous "Two Tune Medley." On the latter, Tormé and Laine sing 20 songs, generally two at a time, in less than five minutes; it is quite annoying. Otherwise, Tormé, who seems to have enjoyed the date, is weighed down and restricted by Cleo Laine's nonswinging style." (Scott Yanow, Allmusic)
Jazzzanger Tormé werkte eind jaren '70, begin jaren '80 regelmatig samen met het trio van pianist Shearing - steeds met geïnspireerd klinkend resultaat. Dit is een live-opname uit oktober 1983. Op z'n achtenvijftigste is Tormé's stem nog even jongensachtig en soepel als altijd en z'n frasering superieur. Zelfs op z'n 70-ste bleef Tormé jongensachtig klinken, zo blijkt uit deze 'late' opname met het trio van pianist Mike Renzi. "This was singer Mel Tormé's last recording before he was stricken with a serious stroke. Remarkably, Tormé had gradually improved both as a singer and as a jazz improviser all throughout his sixties (his voice was in phenomenal shape), and he is heard on this live set in peak form despite being 70. Joined by his regular trio (pianist Mike Renzi, bassist John Leitham, and drummer Donny Osborne), Tormé performs a typical swing-oriented program that includes a Benny Goodman medley, a memorable rendition of "A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square" (he could hold notes on ballads endlessly without wavering), a heated "Pick Yourself Up," and a tribute to the then recently deceased Ella Fitzgerald on "Oh, Lady Be Good," among other numbers. Deze opnamen uit 1956 met the Marty Paich Dek-tette (voor het Bethlehem-label) behoren tot het beste wat hij heeft opgenomen. Mel Tormé and his trio (pianist John Colianni, bassist John Leitham, and drummer Donny Osborne) are joined by clarinetist Ken Peplowski and vibraphonist Peter Appleyard (who are very reminiscent of Goodman and Lionel Hampton), and the emphasis is on swing-era standards. Tormé is in typically fine form on such tunes as "It's All Right with Me," "These Foolish Things," "Three Little Words," and the closing "Ev'ry Time We Say Goodbye." The singer even has some additional fun during this concert (recorded live in Japan) by switching to drums for a rousing "Sing, Sing, Sing," which climaxes the Goodman medley." (Allmusic)
De zanger met de eeuwig jongensachtige stem en de superieure techniek nam met arrangeur Chris Gunning en diens orkest dit album op, met features voor altsaxofonist Phil Woods. Mede door Gunnings arrangementen neigt dit album vaak toch meer naar seventies-style-Sinatriaans croonerwerk, dan naar vocale jazz. Stevie Wonders ballad "All In Love Is Fair" is geknipt voor Tormés stembanden en Mel weet er nog swing in te leggen ook. "New York State of Mind" van Billy Joel is ook zo'n nummer dat vróeg om een grootse crooner-interpretatie. "Send In The Clowns" van Stephen Sondheim wordt hier ontdaan van de sentiment-deken die er normaliter dik overheengetrokken is en wordt hier een vrolijke swinger. Ewan McColls kippenvelballade "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" kan niet kapot en klinkt ook in Mels versie weer geweldig.
Songs die voor een groot deel afkomstig zijn uit Amerikaanse musicals van voor 1950: the Great American Songbook. Hij nam het op in 1964 (en 2 in 1966). Z'n jongensachtige, soepele vocalen worden veelal door groot orkest begeleid.
