Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan werd in 1948 geboren in Faisalabad, Pakistan. Khan werd de bekendste vertolker van de qawwali-muziek, muziek die diep is geworteld in het islamitisch soefisme. Qawwali werd oorspronkelijk gespeeld in dargahs en andere soefistische schrijnen. Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan was a Pakistani singer, songwriter, and music director. He was primarily a singer of qawwali — a form of Sufi devotional music. Often called the "Shahenshah-e-Qawwali" (the King of Kings of Qawwali), he is considered by The New York Times to be the greatest qawwali singer of his generation. He was described as the fourth greatest singer of all time by LA Weekly in 2016. He was known for his vocal abilities and could perform at a high level of intensity for several hours. Khan is widely credited with introducing qawwali music to international audiences. He was also a master in Hindustani classical music. Khan is widely considered to be the most important qawwal in history. In 1987, he received the President of Pakistan's Award for Pride of Performance for his contribution to Pakistani music. Muziek bij de film uit 1994 van Shekhar Kapur. Wat niet voor op de hoes staat, is dat producer Roger White een minstens zo grote rol speelt op dit album als de beroemde Pakistaanse Qawwalizanger. White's rol is een beetje vergelijkbaar met de rol van Michael Brook op een album als "Night Song": Met sythesizers en effecten brengt White een muzikaal raamwerk aan, waarbinnen fragmenten van Khans typische Qawwali-zang is te horen en percussie van diens Pakistaanse begeleiders. Het betreft steeds korte stukjes, vaak tussen de 1 en 3 minuten lang, die in de eerste plaats een sfeer-ondersteunende rol in de film hebben. Ze zijn wel zodanig achter elkaar gezet dat een afgerond album het resultaat is - vaak uitermate rustig van karakter, soms met een flinke vocale uitbarsting van Khan. Als u Khan in een traditioneel-Pakistaanse setting blieft is dit niet uw ding; dit is een cross-over-project.
