"Ze spelen al een tijdje samen, vaak om het werk van John Coltrane te eren. Saxofonist Ravi Coltrane is immers de zoon van John, en bassist Matthew Garrison de zoon van Jimmy, ooit bassist van Coltrane. Ook veteraan Jack DeJohnette drumde meer dan een halve eeuw geleden nog met hem. Niet zo gek dus dat "In Movement", het eerste album van dit trio op ECM, geregeld naar John Coltrane verwijst. Zo opent het met een van zijn mooiste ballads: "Alabama". Die speelt het trio prachtig. Ravi pakt de melodielijn van het nummer ergens halverwege op, waardoor het even als nieuw klinkt. De improvisaties zijn beheerst en ingetogen, zoals dat op ECM-platen gebruikelijk is. Alleen in "Rashied" gaan Coltrane (op sopraansax) en DeJohnette even los zonder bassist, en dat is meteen het vlakste nummer. 'Ravi Coltrane has displayed a great deal of maturity throughout his career, unafraid of covering his father's compositions or songs that he recorded, while successfully finding his own voice. These 2002 sessions feature Coltrane with two distinct rhythm sections, with either Andy Milne or George Colligan on piano and James Genus or Darryl Hall on bass, plus drummer Steve Haas. The comparisons to John Coltrane are inevitable with his explosive interpretations of "26-2" and "Fifth House," along with the bluesy, loping rendition of Thelonious Monk's "Ask Me Now." Yet the tense, brisk arrangement of "'Round Midnight" suggests the hustle and bustle of Manhattan nightlife at that hour, with a tense rhythm behind his furious soprano sax. Ravi's originals also demonstrate his promise as a composer, including the driving "Between Lines" and the delightfully abstract "The Mad 6." "BEAUTY OF SUNRISE is the child of hard bop and the modal music of the 1960s. Jazz legends and their progeny abound; trumpeter Graham Haynes, son of the great jazz drummer Roy Haynes, produced. Other performers include John Coltrane's son Ravi Coltrane and Elvin Jones, drummer in Coltrane's famous quartet. "Suluman Sand" puts African chanting in the context of a jazz tune. The steps taken beyond hard bop by trumpeter Woody Shaw are acknowledged in "Woody's Tune." On the title track, African Mseleku borrows from Brazil to offer us a samba meditation on, naturally, the beauty of sunrise." (Allmusic).
Tweede album, uit 2000, van zoon van John en Alice, ook saxofonist (ook tenor en sopraan). Jazz in het postbopstraatje; met o.a. Ralph Alessi (t), Geri Allen (p) heeft hij een sterk kwartet, al haalt hij de urgentie van pa niet.
