"Pièces romantiques, Op. 42 - Judging from the title, one might assume that this is yet another of the ubiquitous sets of salon-like pieces being produced in those times works that cast glances back to the 1800s rather than looking forward to the new century. But Schmitts title is deceptive. His work could easily be dubbed Pièces modernes and it would be just as legitimate a name because this is music that, while it certainly exudes romantic character, is also breaking free from those musical traditions. Indeed, in this 20+ minute suite, Schmitt takes 19th century subject matter and casts it in a fresh new light. The composer goes several steps beyond his earlier piano suite Crépuscules (begun in 1898) as he takes the listener on a special aural adventure. At times, Pièces romantiques foreshadows Schmitts startlingly original piano suite Ombres which he would begin to compose only a few short years after completing the Pièces romantiques."

De roem van Florent Schmitt (1870-1954) is eigenlijk altijd tegelijk bescheiden maar consistent geweest; hij werd nooit echt bekend, maar hij is evenmin ooit volkomen vergeten. Schmitt, afkomstig uit de Elzas, was een opmerkelijk figuur. Hij sloot zijn studie in Parijs af met het behalen van de prestigieuze 'Prix de Rome', die hij overigens pas bij zijn vierde poging wist te winnen, om vervolgens de bijbehorende studietijd in Rome voornamelijk te besteden aan Europese reizen, tot ergernis van de directie van het Parijse conservatorium. In later jaren behoorde hij tot het Franse establishment, waarvan zijn verkiezing in het Institut de France in 1936 getuigt. Schmitt was een hartstochtelijk verdediger van nieuwe muzikale stijlen en een fervente aanhanger van onder meer Ravel, Hindemith en Stravinsky. (...)
