Begin jaren '80 buitelden de nieuwe Zappa-uitgaven over elkaar heen. Enerzijds een gevolg van het feit dat hij door bonje met zijn vorige platenbaas enige jaren geen nieuwe muziek kon uitbrengen, anderzijds van 's mans productiviteit, die op dat moment op een kwantitatief én artistiek hoogtepunt zat. Dit concert was op 17 november 1981 live op een Amerikaanse radiozender te horen. Zappa's band bestond toen, naast hemzelf (zang, gitaar) uit Ray White (gitaar, zang), Bobby Martin (toetsen, saxofoon, zang), Tommy Mars (toetsen), Ed Mann (vibrafoon, percussie), Scott Thunes (basgitaar), Chad Wackerman (drums) én de jonge Steve Vai ('stunt guitar'). Met zo'n bezetting kan er natuurlijk niets misgaan en dat gaat er dan ook niet. Op soepele wijze worden de songs aaneengeregen, soms afgewisseld met jazzrock-getinte instrumentals (met Al Di Meola als speciale gast!). Van het toen recente "You Are What You Is" wordt o.a. de complete derde plaatkant gespeeld. Ook 'hits' als "Montana" en "Zoot Allures" ontbreken niet.
"This concert has been circulating on the traders scene for many years. It is one of the concerts recorded by the legendary taper, Dan Kaminski, and the sound quality is not bad for a 1975 show. The set list is a classic one from the Bongo Fury tour with Beefhearts vocals on five of the tracks. The packaging is slightly better than some bootlegs. The front cover has a colourised picture of Frank and Don from 1969 (also used on the discs) while the back cover has graduation photos of them both. Im not sure where the background notes are as the CD insert is just a 1975 interview with Don. Theres not even a list of the band members. For completeness sake, here they are: bass Tom Fowler; drums Terry Bozzio; guitar Denny Walley; guitar, vocals Frank Zappa; keyboards, vocals George Duke; soprano saxophone, Harmonica, vocals Captain Beefheart; tenor saxophone, vocals Napoleon M. Het Duitse modern-klassiek ensemble speelde al eerder Zappa-composities ("The Yellow Shark"). Deze nieuwe arrangementen zijn, mede door een nadrukkelijk aanwezige drummer, minder 'klassiek' dan je zou verwachten. Intrigerend werk!
"This album was one of the first and most successful of his more guitar- and song oriented albums albums, garnering attention for such tracks as the Grammy-nominated disco satire "Dancin' Fool," the controversial "Jewish Princess," and the equally controversial "Bobby Brown Goes Down," a song about gay S&M that became a substantial hit in European clubs. While Zappa's attitude on the latter two tracks was even more politically incorrect than usual for him, it didn't stop the album from becoming his second-highest charting ever. Social satire, leering sexual preoccupations, and tight, melodic songs dominated the rest of the record as well, as Zappa stuck to what had been commercially successful for him in the past. The music was undeniably good and belongs to his most accessible. Even if it sometimes drifts a bit, fans of Zappa's '70s work will find "Sheik Yerbouti" on nearly an equal level with "Apostrophe" and "Over-Nite Sensation", both in terms of humor and musical quality."
