Als solisten traden de Nederlandse celliste Quirine Viersen en eerste hoornsolo van deFilharmonie Eliz Erkalp op. deFilharmonie stond voor deze opname onder leiding van Marc Soustrot. "deFilharmonie zet zich voorbeeldig in voor het bij hoornisten geliefde hoornconcert en het minder bekende maar muzikaal interessantere celloconcert. Marc Soustrot dirigeert dynamisch en is maar een enkele keer een beetje routineus. Eliz Erkalp investeert veel affectie en een buitengewoon zangerige klank in het hoornconcert; in dat voor cello frapperen de welsprekendheid en de gedifferentieerde, nooit opschepperige toon van Quirine Viersen." "Although Glière's Second Symphony has never attained the popularity of his Third, it is nevertheless one of the composer's more important works. Cast in four large movements, it exudes Glière's characteristic Russian style and conservative expressive language. "The Zaporozhy Cossacks", conceived as a symphonic poem in 1921, was revised five years later and turned into a ballet-pantomime. The piece celebrates the indomitable spirit of independence and courage of the Cossacks. The musical material is based on several folk melodies of the Ukraine." "The first symphony is a charming work of unmistakably Russian origin. Although it does not show the eastern exoticism that characterizes the works of the Mighty Five, it is closer to Borodin than to Tchaikovsky. The style has an uncanny resemblance to that of Kalinnikov, whose Symphony No. 2 was written in the same year. Th 15-minute symphonic poem "The Sirens" dates from 1908, the year in which Glière began to appear as a conductor in Russia after completing his studies in Germany. The piece is a tone poem evoking the mermaids whose song attracted seamen to their doom. It is probably the most impressionistic piece that Glière ever wrote. For most of the duration of the piece, the skilful orchestral writing keeps the textures in a half-tone, creating a sound mist from which only the abundant harp interventions emerge.
