De naam van pianist Horace Silver zal vooral altijd gekoppeld blijven aan de albums die hij eind jaren '50 en begin jaren '60 maakte, en aan "Song For My Father" in het bijzonder. Ten minste, als we moeten afgaan op dit fijne concert uit 1976, met twee relatief jonge solisten in z'n groep die pas later alombekend zouden worden: trompettist Tom Harrell en saxofonist Bob Berg. Berg klinkt vaak intenser dan we 'm later ooit gehoord hebben, Harrell speelt beheerst en smaakvol. "The most notable aspect to this fine effort by the 1980 Cedar Walton Trio (which is comprised of the pianist-leader, tenor saxophonist Bob Berg, bassist David Williams and drummer Billy Higgins) is that Abbey Lincoln takes vocals on four of the eight selections. Lincoln (who is in top form) introduces two of her songs ("Not in Love" and "Castles") and also interprets "In a Sentimental Mood" and Walton's tribute to Duke Ellington "The Maestro." Otherwise Walton's group plays a couple of common Thelonious Monk tunes, Jobim's "Sabia" and "On the Trail." A well-rounded and easily recommended set of advanced straightahead jazz." (Allmusic)

This one, sans brother Michael but with Bob Berg on tenor sax, showcases not only Brecker's fleet, sweet, bright tonal style, but also his mettle as a composer, penning all seven pieces here. David Kikoski (p), Dieter Ilg (b), and Joey Baron (d) comprise a rhythm section playing together with the Brecker-Berg tandem for the first time. Brecker specializes in elongated, complicated core melodies. Two of his very best are included, including the absolutely gorgeous "Moontide". The most popping numbers -- "Ting Chang" and "Mojoe" -- are real-time jams, hard-driving, forward-thinking hard bop. Baron is particularly animated, excited, and on the mark with every measure. "The Sleaze Factor" is the most intriguing number, one that purposefully slows as the piece wears on in its slippery leech, lugubrious, funky samba fashion.
