"Judy Collins provided Stephen Stills with the inspiration for "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes," a song he composed in 1969 as their relationship was coming to an end. Lovers no more, the two remained friends over the years and decided to strike up a musical partnership nearly 50 years later. The album deliberately plays off their past, with the duo reviving songs from their individual albums -- "Who Knows Where the Time Goes" from Collins; "So Begins The Task" from Stills -- and selecting covers from their peers, including the Traveling Wilburys' "Handle with Care," Tim Hardin's "Reason to Believe," Bob Dylan's "Girl From The North Country," and Leonard Cohen's "Everybody Knows". It's a clean and crisp production, so much so that its transparency reveals the disparity between Collins' sweet voice and Stills' scraggly singing, a pairing that can sound as smooth as sandpaper. "Performers are known because of different qualities, like the ability to craft songs or sing with emotion. With folksingers like Judy Collins, there was never any question. In the '60s, her voice could always be counted on to amaze and astonish listeners. Collins also had the good taste to choose good songs by great writers like Dylan, Leonard Cohen, and Joni Mitchell. The only weak spot in this otherwise rosy scenario centered on occasional lapses in judgment when it came to arrangements. Early material like "Turn! Turn! Turn!" and "Suzanne" features little more than guitar and bass backup. These cuts still sound honest and fresh. Because Collins' vocals were so commanding, though, it was also easy to add busier arrangements to good effect. One of the best cuts is Ian Tyson's "Someday Soon," featuring Buddy Emmons on pedal steel and James Burton on guitar. Inmiddels is zij een vitale 80er die in 2017 nog het sterke album Everybody Knows uitbracht met haar ex uit de jaren 60 Stephen Stills. Op Spellbound presenteert zij voor het eerst een verzameling eigen werk. Songs die met veel nostalgie terugkijken op haar lange carrière, beginnend in het New Yokse folk-Mekka Greenwich Village van de vroege jaren 60. Wie haar vroeg overleden minnaar was in die tijd blijft onbekend, maar hij krijgt een prachtig eerbetoon in So Alive. Zo speelt ieder nummer zich af in de verleden tijd. "The only reason that I do not rate this as five stars is that I would have expected more from Judy Collins on it. However, it is a beautiful album, and such relaxing pleasant listening. I had not heard of the clarinetist before, but I would hope that Richard and Judy could make another cd of similar music. It was interesting to hear Saint Saens "The Swan" played as I always associate that piece with piano and cello- if my memory serves me correctly. The music creates a feeling of tranquility, and the backing is subtle and does not overpower either the clear diction of Judy Collins or the sweet notes of the clarinet." (Mrs. J.Roberts)
Amerikaans folkzangeres van de generatie Joan Baez. Ze maakt geen puristische folk, maar zorgvuldig gearrangeerde folky 'adult pop' met een rustgevende, ja troostende werking. Ze maakt al platen sinds de vroege jaren zestig. In 1967 scoorde ze in Amerika een grote hit met "Both Sides Now" van de toen nog vrij onbekende en piepjonge Joni Mitchell. Later vierde successen met haar versies van o.a. de sentimentele musicalsong "Send In The Clowns" en de gospel "Amazing Grace". Tijdens dit optreden in de Wolf Trap Foundation For The Perfoming Arts in Vienna, VA zingt ze ze allemaal. Ze zingt ook Cohens "Bird On A Wire", de countrypopklassieker "City Of New Orleans" (bij ons bekend als "'t Is Weer Voorbij Die Mooie Zomer" en de folktraditional "She Moved Through The Fair". De kippevelafsluiter is haar versie van "Who Knows Where The Time Goes" (van Fairport Convention met Sandy Denny).
