"Organist Lonnie Smith heeft in zijn leven nog nooit een universitaire graad behaald. Waarschijnlijk heeft hij van de doctorstitel gebruik gemaakt om de verwarring met pianist Lonnie Liston Smith te voorkomen. Smith begon zijn muzikale carrière in het begin van de jaren zestig in het kwartet van George Benson. Later stapte hij over naar Lou Donaldson en bracht bovendien nog enkele briljante soloalbums uit op Blue Note. Na al die jaren houdt hij zich nog altijd bezig met de klassieke souljazz die we uit die periode kennen. Op "Too Damn Hot!" gaat hij te keer alsof de tijd heeft stilgestaan en geen invloed heeft gehad op zijn verouderingsproces. De stomende bebop van "The Whip" en "Evil Turn" worden afgewisseld met stemmige ballads zoals "Silver Serenade" van Horace Silver. Vooral in up tempo nummers als het funky "Back Track", "One Cylinder" en "Your Mama's Got A Complex" levert zijn ingehouden, broeierige spel een optimale spanningsboog op." (AD, Muziekweb)
"The follow-up to 1986's Something Grand finds pianist Hilton Ruiz using a similar group (including trumpeter Lew Soloff and Sam Rivers on tenor, soprano, and flute), but adding guitarist Rodney Jones and third percussionist Jerry Gonzalez. Ruiz contributed five of the six selections ("Come Dance With Me" is by trombonist Dick Griffin), and the music is advanced Afro-Cuban jazz that moves past bebop; in fact, the nearly 15-minute "Eastern Vibrations" is often quite free. "The sentiment that comes embedded in Lena Horne's classy 1994 concert performance at the Supper Club in New York, is enough to carry the show all by itself. Her magnetic personality gives the performance a full charge of passion that's complemented by her convincing vocal expressions. She's a born communicator. Most of the program is performed with her regular backing quintet; five numbers are performed with The Count Basie Orchestra. Both a Duke Ellington medley and her Cole Porter medley stand out for their comfortable texture and caring attitude. The Count Basie Orchestra performs "April in Paris" and "Jumpin' at the Woodside" as instrumental arrangements with all the usual trimmings. They were in fine form for this event, and both arrangements offer superb ensemble counterpoint as well as thrilling solo opportunities."
