In het kader van de 70-ste verjaardag van de Noorse gitaarvirtuoos Terje Rypdal, op 24 augustus 2017, leek het ons een goed idee om onze Rypdal-collectie aan te vullen met dit door drie jazz(rock)grootheden gemaakte kunstwerk uit 1981. "Essentially a continuation of Rypdal Vitous DeJohnette, this album somewhat lacks the atmospheric keyboards of its predecessor. It is nonetheless quite compelling, particularly in DeJohnette's propulsive drumming on the title track, and his phantasmic piano and voice on "Uncomposed Appendix." This album also features one of Rypdal's best-loved works, the gorgeously stark and stately "Topplue, Votter & Skjerf" -- Norwegian for "Hat, gloves, and scarf," an idiomatic phrase implying the onset of their long and cold winter." Opgenomen tijdens het Jazz Open, in Stuttgart, juli 1994. Drie meesters op hun instrument, die alledrie in hun projecten regelmatig genre-overschrijdend bezig zijn. Zo ook hier. Rypdal speelt vaak op z'n meest rockende manier, zoals hij dat met z'n groep The Chasers liet horen. Z'n sound is onmiskenbaar, ook al gooit hij lagen vervormers over zijn signaal. In het eindnummer rockt hij er als een bezetene op los. Gurtu laat horen een oerstrakke fusiondrummer te zijn, maar daarnaast beheerst hij een heel arsenaal Indiase percussie tot in de puntjes. Het mooist is het als hij deze disciplines combineert. Bijzonder ook om te zien: hij zit op z'n knieën achter z'n drumstel. En Vitous kan met z'n contrabas ruimtelijke sferen neerzetten met diepe noten (geplukt of gestreken), hij kan ook als een razende loopjes spelen. Zawinul is a superb album by Jazz composer and pianist Joe Zawinul, recorded in 1970. Conceptually and sonically, this is really the first Weather Report album in all but name, confirming that Joe Zawinul was the primary creative engine behind the group from the beginning. It is also the link between Weather Report and Miles Davis keyboard-laden experiments on "In A Silent Way" from 1969; indeed, the tune In A Silent Way is redone in the more complex form in which Zawinul envisioned it. The line-up on Zawinul includes Zawinul and the formidable Herbie Hancock on keyboards, putting the galactic sound effects of the Echoplex and ring modulator to good use. The third founder of Weather Report, Miroslav Vitous, checks in on bass. Hardbopping trumpeter Woody Shaw proves to be perfectly adept at the jazz-rock game. Also Jack DeJohnette features on melodica and percussion, as does Hubert Laws on flute and Wayne Shorter on soprano sax. (bron: Bertus / MOV)
