Blue maqams (2017)

"Anouar Brahem, meester op de ûd (Arabische luit), is een schoolvoorbeeld van hoe je traditionele muziek eigentijds maakt. Hij maakt al bijna 20 jaar prachtige albums voor het prestigieuze ECM, zoals "Le Voyage De Sahar" (2006) en "Souvenance" (2015), dat hij schreef n.a.v. de politieke omwentelingen in zijn geboorteland Tunesië. Op "Blue Maqams" slaat hij nadrukkelijk een brug tussen het Arabische toonstelsel (de maqam) en de jazz vandaar de titel. Daartoe heeft hij de handen ineen geslagen met de legendarische ritmesectie Dave Holland en Jack DeJohnette, met Brits multi-instrumentalist Django Bates op piano. In de resulterende negen open composities laten de muzikanten elkaar veel ruimte. "La Nuit" en het titelstuk zijn voorbeelden van zulke weidse stukken, terwijl "Bom Dia Rio" zacht swingende jazz brengt. "Persepoliss Mirage" heeft een indrukwekkend dreigend thema, waarna de licht stuwende baslijn van "Unexpected Outcome" de fraaie plaat naar een sfeervol einde brengt." Hudson (2017)

"Too often, musicians of this caliber who come together for a "project" find the result muddied by difficulties, from ego things to production excesses. Thankfully, none of that is the case with this recording by the all-star, multi-generational quartet of drummer Jack DeJohnette, bassist Larry Grenadier, keyboardist John Medeski, and guitarist John Scofield. The album title signifies the geographical region in upstate New York where these players currently reside, ánd highlights the notion that the area has always offered a place of solace for artists -- especially musicians. The latter is reflected in the choice of covers here. The mood throughout is loose and conversational. These guys play songs they love to discover what else is inside them. Hudson is a modern update that harkens back - in feel - to the great Blue Note sessions of the '60s, when a group of jazz masters could come together to play good music and let off some steam. Some other time The lost session from the Black Forest (2016)

Dit is een tot nu toe onbekend 'Duits' album van pianist Bill Evans. Het werd in 1968 door het label MPS opgenomen, maar nooit eerder uitgebracht. De producenten Hans Georg Brunner-Schwer en Joachim-Ernst Berendt namen het trio van Bill Evans indertijd mee naar een studio in het Zwarte Woud. Ze zouden spelen, opnemen en daarna wel zien of het mogelijk was om het album uit te brengen. Evans stond immers onder contract bij een andere platenmaatschappij. Nadat de plaat op 20 juni 1968 in Villingen werd opgenomen gebeurde er echter niet veel meer. De opnamen bleven in het archief liggen. Tijdens het evenement Jazzahead 2013 kwam Zev Feldman van Resonance Records het bestaan van het album ter ore. Hij besloot na een eerste beluistering tot een release. De sessie, met Bill Evans solo, maar ook samen met Eddie Gomez op bas en Jack DeJohnette op drums, verschijnt op nu op dubbel-CD. Het is het enige studioalbum in deze bezetting van het trio. Another Time The Hilversum Concert (2017)

"Het album "Bill Evans: At The Montreux Jazz Festival", vastgelegd op 15 juni 1968 en in 1997 was tot vorig jaar het enige audiodocument van het sensationele monsterverbond van pianist Bill Evans met bassist Eddie Gomez en drummer Jack DeJohnette, totdat Resonance Records ons in 2016 op het, zo bleek later, zeer terecht prijswinnende "Some Other Time: The Lost Sessions From The Black Forrest" trakteerde, slechts vijf dagen later vastgelegd in de beroemde MPS Studios in Villingen, Duitsland. Dit welhaast perfecte kwaliteitsproduct wordt heden echter nog overtroffen met "The Hilversum Concert", wéér twee dagen later opgenomen (22 juni 1968) in VARA Studio 8 voor het radioprogramma Jazz In Actie. Het is vastgelegd met apparatuur van op dat moment het hoogst mogelijke niveau en dit is daardoor waarschijnlijk audiofielen opgelet! mogelijk de best klinkende live-opname van Bill Evans. To Be Continued (1981)

In het kader van de 70-ste verjaardag van de Noorse gitaarvirtuoos Terje Rypdal, op 24 augustus 2017, leek het ons een goed idee om onze Rypdal-collectie aan te vullen met dit door drie jazz(rock)grootheden gemaakte kunstwerk uit 1981. "Essentially a continuation of Rypdal Vitous DeJohnette, this album somewhat lacks the atmospheric keyboards of its predecessor. It is nonetheless quite compelling, particularly in DeJohnette's propulsive drumming on the title track, and his phantasmic piano and voice on "Uncomposed Appendix." This album also features one of Rypdal's best-loved works, the gorgeously stark and stately "Topplue, Votter & Skjerf" -- Norwegian for "Hat, gloves, and scarf," an idiomatic phrase implying the onset of their long and cold winter." In Movement (2016)

"Ze spelen al een tijdje samen, vaak om het werk van John Coltrane te eren. Saxofonist Ravi Coltrane is immers de zoon van John, en bassist Matthew Garrison de zoon van Jimmy, ooit bassist van Coltrane. Ook veteraan Jack DeJohnette drumde meer dan een halve eeuw geleden nog met hem. Niet zo gek dus dat "In Movement", het eerste album van dit trio op ECM, geregeld naar John Coltrane verwijst. Zo opent het met een van zijn mooiste ballads: "Alabama". Die speelt het trio prachtig. Ravi pakt de melodielijn van het nummer ergens halverwege op, waardoor het even als nieuw klinkt. De improvisaties zijn beheerst en ingetogen, zoals dat op ECM-platen gebruikelijk is. Alleen in "Rashied" gaan Coltrane (op sopraansax) en DeJohnette even los zonder bassist, en dat is meteen het vlakste nummer. De elektronica die bassist Matthew Garrison aan veel nummers toevoegt, leveren, hoe beheerst ook, juist extra spanning en diepte op." (Gijsbert Kamer, Volkskrant; 4 uit 5 sterren)

Selim Sivad A Tribute To Miles Davis (1998)

"Selim Sivad: The Music of Miles Davis is the fifteenth album by the jazz group the World Saxophone Quartet and their third on the Canadian Justin Time label. The album features performances by Hamiet Bluiett, John Purcell, Oliver Lake and David Murray, with guests Jack DeJohnette, Chief Bey, Okyerema Asante, and Titos Sompa and is dedicated to Miles Davis. The Allmusic review by Tim Sheridan awarded the album 4 stars, stating, "While there is a plethora of Miles Davis tribute albums out there, this one is interesting for the basic fact that this horn quartet attempts to evoke his spirit without the use of a trumpet. To add spice, they employ African drums, with kalimba and voice.". (Wikipedia).

Changes (1984)

Changes is een muziekalbum uit 1984 van Keith Jarrett, Gary Peacock en Jack DeJohnette. Het trio verrichtte in januari 1983 in New York City een aantal opnamesessies in deze voor hen (deels) nieuwe samenstelling. Ze namen toen standaardwerken van anderen op, wat nieuw voor hen was. Tijdens die sessies werd er ook geïmproviseerd en het resultaat kwam op deze elpee. De plaat verscheen niet met de vermelding Standards op de hoezen, omdat het voornamelijk Jarrett was die hier aan het werk was. Het album kwam uit tussen beide Standards-albums opgenomen in dezelfde periode. (Bron: Wikipedia)

Skylark (1974)

Geremasterde uitgave van "Skylark" van Paul Desmond, opgenomen in december 1973. "For those who missed it the first time, Desmond remakes "Take Ten" -- without the Middle Eastern elements -- "Romance de Amor" is eventually dominated by Szabo, and the inclusion of "Was a Sunny Day" proves that Desmond's involvement with the music of Paul Simon in 1970 was not a passing infatuation. Don Sebesky is credited with the "arrangements" but his orchestrating hand is not felt except for a single solo cello (George Ricci) in an adaptation of Purcell ("Music for a While"). It's a cautious change of pace for Desmond, although the fiercer context into which he was placed doesn't really fire his imagination". (Richard S. Ginell, Allmusic).
