Voor als u de box "Back To Mono" of verzamelaars van alle op deze 1CD-compilatie vertegenwoordigde acts te veel van het goede vindt is dit een handzame inleiding met het beste en bekendste werk van een van de pioniers op het gebied van popmuziek-productie. Z'n 22 bekendste stukken zijn hier verenigd, van de vroege successen met The Crystals en The Ronettes tot de latere wereldhits met The Righteous Brothers en Ike & Tina Turner. Die nummers schreef hij vaak zelf, in samenwerking met Barry Mann en Cynthia Weill, of met Jerry Leiber. Met dielaatste schreef hij het goddelijke "Spanish Harlem", de eerste solo-hit van Ben E. King uit 1961. De song is hier vertegenwoordigd in een unieke niet eerder uitgebrachte versie, gezongen door Phil zélf.
This set focuses on the legendary eccentrics early work (from the 1958 to early 1963). Half of the selections are making their CD debut. These include Nights Of Mexico by Russell Byrd (the recording alias of songwriter-producer Bert Berns), 2 titles by Bobby Sheen (the later Bob B. Soxx & the Blue Jeans lead vocalist) and both sides of an ultra rare 45 by Terry Day (aka Terry Melcher, the son of Doris Day). More familiar hits by the Paris Sisters, Curtis Lee and Gene Pitney are also featured. The set contains the first record Spector ever made, Dont You Worry My Little Pet by his own group the Teddy Bears, taped in 58 at the fabled Gold Star studio in Los Angeles, the scene of many of his future triumphs. Soon realising the spotlight wasnt for him, and ever the control freak, Spector then set about building himself a career as a producer. Before long he had inveigled his way into Leiber & Stollers inner circle at Atlantic Records in New York, where late in 1961 he launched his own label, Philles.
Documentaire uit 1982 die een interessant licht werpt op deze invloedrijke producer, de man van 'The Wall Of Sound'. Interessant omdat zowel grote bewonderaars als nuancerende collega's (vooral Leiber en Stoller) als Spector-haters geïnterviewd worden. Ook artiesten die met hem gewerkt hebben, zoals Darlene Love, ex-vrouw Ronnie Spector en The Ramones doen hun verhaal en sparen hem daarbij niet. Het beeld dat opdoemt is dat van een weliswaar geniale, maar ook egocentrische, liegende en bedriegende man. De DVD gaat vergezeld van een boekwerkje dat tot aan 2009 is geactualiseerd, toen inmiddels ook de ruchtmakende moordzaak speelde, waarvoor hij een jarenlange gevangenisstraf moet uitzitten.
