"With each of his Trio Tapestry albums, it feels like saxophonist Joe Lovano is trying to strip his playing and the group's sound down to its most essential elements. On their third album, he takes this approach even further, turning each song into what feels like a prayer. Once again joined by pianist Marilyn Crispell and drummer Carmen Castaldi, Lovano doesn't so much improvise with his bandmates as commune with them, crafting songs that have the atmosphere of a dark room meditation and other times the quiet warmth of a friendly front porch conversation. Of the meditative variety there is "Grace Notes," which opens with the abrupt shimmer of a gong and a full minute of silence before Crispell's low piano rumble shepherds the trio back to life. The song features Lovano on the tárogató, an Eastern European instrument whose reedy sound (a combination between a clarinet and a soprano sax) blends with Crispell's Asian-influenced harmonies like a singer whispering through fog." "Bassist Henri Texier leads an all-star quintet bolstered by the presence of special guest Joe Lovano on tenor sax in this live 1986 recording. While Texier either wrote or co-wrote many of the selections, he amply features his musicians while not taking much of the solo spotlight for himself. The leader's energetic post-bop cooker "Zentral Motiv is a potent opener, highlighted by strong solos from Lovano and Louis Sclavis on soprano sax. The eerie "Baton Rouge" is a slow-to-develop group improvisation, with guitarist Philippe Deschepper prominent in the mix and explosive bursts by Sclavis on bass clarinet. The four-part suite "Grillage" blends several different contributions by the quintet's members. "Paris Batignolles" is a joyous celebration, with the blend of reeds almost suggesting an accordion. "In 2007, for the 40th anniversary of John Coltranes death, BBCs Jazz On 3 commissioned a tribute from sax virtuosi Dave Liebman and Joe Lovano, embracing the hard-bop Coltrane of the late 1950s as well as the anthemic free-jazz master he became. Resonance releases those tapes 10 years later, 50 years after Coltrane's passing. Liebman had to assemble a hastily modified version of his Saxophone Summit band (Phil Markowitz is on piano, the wonderful Billy Hart on drums), but the collective passion is palpable. Liebman and Lovano rip through Coltranes boppish Locomotion as a two-tenor tussle; Lovanos rugged tenor and Liebmans ethereal soprano sharply contrast on a segue of "Central Park West" and the rapturous "Dear Lord"; Coltranes world musicianship is evoked by the Spanish theme of "Olé"; and theres a prayerlike ecstasy to the freeform title track. "De eerste plaat van John Scofield voor weer actieve label Impulse! is behalve erg fraai ook wat droevig. De aanleiding voor de gitarist om het kwartet waarmee hij in de jaren 90 werkte weer bij elkaar te roepen, was de dood van zijn zoon, die in 2013 aan kanker stierf. Het inspireerde hem behalve tot de fraaie blues "Mr. Puffy" tot acht andere stukken waarin Scofield lijkt terug te grijpen naar de muziek uit zijn eigen jeugd. Teder en toch swingend verwijst de gitarist naar oude country- en blueswijsjes en komt er ook een beetje soul-jazz voorbij. De hernieuwde samenwerking met drummer Bill Stewart en vooral tenorsaxofonist Joe Lovano pakt erg goed uit. Fraai zijn de unisono partijen tussen gitaar en saxofoon. Lovano met mooi zwevende noten en Scofield met zijn ingehouden melancholieke spel. Het geluid is semi-akoestisch, met ook een voorname rol voor de nieuwkomer hier, Larry Grenadier. Een op de muziek van Wayne Shorter geïnspireerd programma, opgenomen tijdens het Monterey Jazz Festival in december 2013. Een kleine anderhalf jaar eerder, in juli 2012, werd dit programma al in Nederland op North Sea Jazz gebracht. Toen was de groep hagelnieuw. Pieter van Hoogdalem tekende indertijd op voor Radio 6: "Het gebeurt niet vaak dat jazzgiganten als saxofonist Joe Lovano, trompettist Dave Douglas en drummer Joey Baron samen het podium delen. Opvallend dat dit trio er voor kiest om zich te laten bijstaan door twee jonge, minder ervaren musici. Maar het is meteen duidelijk dat pianist Lawrence Fields en bassiste Linda Oh volkomen op hun gemak zijn tussen deze zwaargewichten. Verwacht geen gelikte aankondigingen: deze musici laten de muziek voor zich spreken. De groep gaat abstract van start, waarbij Lovano en Douglas een samenspel laten horen dat heerlijk wringt en af en toe atonaal lijkt te zijn. Typisch voor de muziek van Shorter waarin de schoonheid vaak onder oppervlakte verborgen ligt."
DVD uit 2006 met live-opnamen uit 1992. In de tijd (eind jaren tachtig, begin jaren negentig) zat de gitarist misschien wel op z'n creatieve piek. Met Pat Metheny en Bill Frisell vormde hij de top van de licht moderne jazzgitaristen en 'een nieuwe Scofield' was altijd weer een belevenis. Hier speelt de groep die te horen is op het album "What We Do" in vrije, spannende en vlammende moderne jazz, waarbij de vier spelers elkaar constant uitdagen. Saxofonist Joe Lovano krijgt hierbij minstens zoveel soloruimte als Scofield.
