"The hit of the 2005 Salzburg Festival, is the most moving performance of the opera I've ever come across", schrijft Robert Levine, "the setting and direction are not traditional--Willi Decker's staging takes as its metaphor time and its passing, with death looming about, literally. (...) The sense of fun and adventure and creating something special is palpable. Even traditionalists will love this performance." Maar Gramophone-recensent Alan Blyth moet niets hebben van de enscenering: "A hard-boiled, ridiculously over-disciplined Konzept by Willy Decker, all too typical of German direction today.". Hij is evenwel vol lof over vooral Netrebko: "Her voice fills the Grosses Festspielhaus with rich-hued, expressive sound."

Dubbele tien op ClassicsToday: "Rolando Villazón and Anna Netrebko, opera's "golden couple" (or is it "dream team?"), have released their first CD of duets. When you think of Caballé and Carreras, early in their careers, or Callas and di Stefano (not to mention Sutherland and Horne), you think of great collaborations. With Netrebko and Villazon, their voices do not particularly complement one another's; they're both just superb artists, utterly in their prime, with healthy, attractive voices and they sing well together. But the sum is precisely the equal of the parts. That having been said, this CD gives great pleasure. It's a true pleasure to hear singing and communicating of this caliber." "We can be thankful to Virgin for not following up Villazón's obligatory first release, "Italian Opera Arias", with another heaping helping of spaghetti. Here, Villazón is heard in some of the very fine solo arias that originate within the French Romantic tradition. Of course, Villazón's delivery and approach remain solidly Italian even in French literature, even down to incorporating a bit of the Caruso-like "sob" into his singing. Villazón's performance throughout the CD is quite consistent, as is the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France in its role as accompanist, guided steadily, and with heart, by conductor Evelino Pidò. If Rolando Villazón keeps making recordings as good as this one is, perhaps someday he will make audiences forget Pavarotti and Domingo in the same manner that they once made the world forget singers like Alfred Piccaver and Giacomo Lauri-Volpi."
