(Website Bimhuis)
Op 2 mei 2016 op het Gronau Jazz Fest. Live concerts by the Michael Wollny Trio are always experiences to be treasured. These three ideally matched musicians never fail to find fascinating new directions for the music, or to take the listener by surprise. 'Klangspuren' captures the sight and the sound of two quite exceptional performances by Wollny's new trio. These sets demonstrate the leaps and bounds by which the group has progressed artistically in the past two years. These two snapshots of the Michael Wollny Trio in live situations show the trio's infinite capacity to 'morph in mood and dart this way and that' (Financial Times), to cross styles and epochs, to play at very different levels of intensity. The 2015 CD set features material from the Nachtfahrten album, the DVD from 2014 features material from Weltentraum - timeless music rooted in the here and now. Please note that the CD and DVD contain different content. (bron: ACT)
"Inspired by Norman Granz’s Jazz at the Philharmonic series (1944–1983), ACT Music started the label’s Jazz at Berlin Philharmonic series in 2012, with the aim of bringing together musicians from jazz and beyond, performing live in the Berliner Philharmonie concert hall. The first ever recording in the series featured three outstanding European pianists, Michael Wollny (Germany), Iiro Rantala (Finland) and Leszek Mozdzer (Poland), playing an exhilarating set. The experiment was so successful that the trio repeated it in 2018 and once again in December 2024, this time as a quartet with pianist Grégory Privat (France/Martinique), resulting in XVI in the series. And if anything, this concert is even more adventurous than its predecessors. Each pianist takes one solo performance. Five duets provide even more complexity and contrast. The finale is all four pianists playing a storming version of Ellington’s “Caravan”. In all, it’s a stonking concert of jaw-dropping virtuosity." (UK Jazz News)
"Between them, the German pianist Michael Wollny and French accordionist Vincent Peirani create as rich a variety of musical sounds, textures and forms as you’re ever likely to hear from two acoustic instruments. In style, these 10 pieces go from highly structured arrangement through more conventional jazz treatment to abstract free improvisation. Each has a charm of its own, makes perfect sense and is formidably well played. Outstanding among them are Wollny’s "Bells" and arrangements of Barber’s "Adagio For Strings" and Björk’s "Hunter". Even in the quietest passages the dynamic rapport between the two is obvious. The two final tracks are live concert recordings, where the duet’s improvisation bears out Wollny’s description of playing with Peirani as 'like tennis on fast forward'." (Freaky Party)
