"This is a release which will be of great interest to all VW devotees, containing as it does first recordings of two early scores, The Steersman and The Future which were left incomplete by the composer and which have been prepared for performance by Martin Yates. Hugh Cobbe’s notes provide valuable background on all the compositions and I’ve drawn on them in the course of this review. (...) The recorded sound is very good indeed and Dutton have provided good documentation. This is a disc which sheds fresh light on Vaughan Williams’ composing activities around the turn of the twentieth century. As such, it will be of considerable interest to anyone interested in the music of this great composer."
(Wil Zenhorst, Platomania; cijfer: 7,5)
Hugh the Drover (or Love in the Stocks) is an opera in two acts by Ralph Vaughan Williams to an original English libretto by Harold Child. The work has set numbers with recitatives. It has been described as a modern example of a ballad opera. Contemporary comment noted the use of humour and the role of the chorus in the work, in the context of developing English opera. According to Michael Kennedy, the composer took first inspiration for the opera from this question to Bruce Richmond, editor of The Times Literary Supplement, around 1909–1910: "I want to set a prize fight to music. Can you find someone to make a libretto for me?" Vaughan Williams worked on the opera for a number of years, before and after World War I. The work did not receive its first performance until 4 July 1924 at the Royal College of Music, London, in performances described as "private dress rehearsals". The "professional premiere" was at His Majesty's Theatre, London, on 14 July 1924. (...) (wikipedia.org)
De symfonie bestaat uit vier delen, maar "each of the first three has its tail attached to the head of its neighbour": 1. 2. Moderato — over het tweede deel schreef Vaughan Williams: "The trumpets start almost inaudibly, but they keep hammering away at their figure for over forty bars, getting louder and louder." 3. Scherzo. Allegro vivace 4. Epilogue. Moderato (wikipedia.org)
"Vaughan Williams: Retrospect Review by James Manheim Ralph Vaughan Williams was a prolific composer who worked at various levels of the musical world, and despite the efforts of specialist labels, there seems to be not only a good supply of works left to discover but also audiences for these; this album made classical best-seller lists in early 2024. (...) The London Choral Sinfonia has just the right accessibility and warmth in the shorter pieces, and the album, as a whole, has a feeling not of completism but of exploring the great variety of Vaughan Williams' music, something not always fully appreciated."
