Just Friends (2002)

Deze compilatie put uit retro-bebop-albums die de saxofonist midden jaren '70 opnam voor het Catalyst-label: "Forecast: Sonny & Red" uit 1975 en "I Remember Bird" uit 1977. Allmusic over "Forecast": "Sonny Stitt and Red Holloway make a perfect team on this exciting jam session record. Stitt sticks here to tenor while Holloway alternates between tenor and alto. With fine backup by pianist Art Hillery, bassist Larry Gales and drummer Clarence Johnston, Sonny and Red battle it out "The Way You Look Tonight," "Lester Leaps In," and "Just Friends". Holloway was able to keep up with the combative Stitt and the fireworks are well worth savoring." en over "I Remember Bird": "Stitt, who spent his entire career playing in a style built on Bird's, is in good form during this quintet date which features him on both alto and tenor. With Frank Rosolino (tmb), Dolo Coker (p), Allen Jackson (b) and Clarence Johnston (d), Stitt stretches out on Rosolino's "Waltz for Diane" and the traditional hymn "Yes Jesus Loves Me."

Just In Case You Forgot How Bad He Really Was (2003)

"Important discovery. This 1997 CD has a previously unreleased Sonny Stitt club appearance that took place in San Francisco's Keystone Korner in September 1981. It is a special all-star concert in which Stitt splits his time between tenor and alto and is joined by pianist Cedar Walton, bassist Herbie Lewis, drummer Billy Higgins, and (on a few numbers) vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson, altoist Richie Cole, and John Handy on alto and tenor. Stitt, a master of the bebop vocabulary, was not an innovator, but he was a fiery competitor who could blow most musicians off the stand when he chose to. In this case, he had a lot of respect for Cole and Handy, but still played at his best, just in case. The CD is mostly a showcase for the leader, who is well featured on the ad lib "Dig Dr. Woody," "Everything Happens to Me," and "Laura." Other highlights include lengthy renditions of "Lover Man" and "Wee." Recommended." (Scott Yanow, Allmusic)

Sonny Side Up (1958)

"Dizzy Gillespie brings together tenor saxophonists Sonny Stitt and Sonny Rollins for four extended cuts, and in the process comes up with one of the most exciting "jam session" records in the jazz catalog. While the rhythm section of pianist Ray Bryant, bassist Tommy Bryant, and drummer Charlie Persip provides solid rhythmic support, Stitt and Rollins get down to business trading fours and reeling off solo fireworks. On "The Eternal Triangle," in particular, Stitt and Rollins impress in their roles as tenor titans, with Stitt going in for sheer muscle as that most stout of bebop cutters and Rollins opting for some pacing as a more thematic player. Gillespie adds his own split commentary on the proceedings with a casual solo on "After Hours" and a competitively blistering statement on "I Know That You Know"." (Stephen Cook, Allmusic)

In Brasil With Zimbo Trio (1979)

"This 1979 date would certainly qualify as one of the surprises in the litter were Stitt not so ubiquitous, as likely to show up on any given day in Brazil as in Tokyo, Paris, London, Stockholm, or Chicago. A rare recording, it's once again resurfaced as a limited release. Although the Zimbo Trio dedicated itself to performing Brazilian music exclusively, on five of the eight tracks they make exceptions for Stitt, who is restrained but always melodic, tasteful and swinging."
