"This is a relatively little known album recorded live by a large assembly of Jazz musicians from several countries situated around the Baltic Sea, called JazzBaltica Ensemble, directed by American saxophonist / composer David Murray. The ensemble included some of the absolutely top-notch Jazz players from the Baltic countries. Another American taking part in the ensemble is tuba player Howard Johnson. The music is a wonderful example of a Big Band setting, which allows for a series of expanded improvisations by all the participants, either individually or in small groups, accompanied by the entire ensemble. Although clear melodic themes are stated periodically, most of the music is freely improvised and allows for a large degree of individual expression. The solos are all exceptional, which is not surprising considering the incredible level of the musicians involved." (Polish-Jazz).

Far from being a sellout to commercialism, this set features the WSQ (altoists Julius Hemphill and Oliver Lake, tenor saxophonist David Murray and baritonist Hamiet Bluiett) meeting the six soul and R&B tunes (which are joined by three complementary originals) head on. The WSQ was always open to playing rhythmically and was not allergic to strong melodies while including solo and group improvisations that were quite advanced. "I got this CD because I found the track Evidence to be a powerful fusion of Amiri Baraka's scathing poetry and Murray's jazz composition. Op 10 oktober2013 bezoekt Murray met zijn Infinity Quartet featuring Macy Gray het Wilminktheater: "Wat krijg je als een soulvrouw als Macy Gray haar muzikale krachten bundelt met saxofonist David Murray? Een interessante combinatie die zorgt voor een muzikale avond met een grote portie soul, blues en jazz. Met haar unieke stem bracht Macy Gray een aangename verandering teweeg in de soulwereld. Voor jazzliefhebbers is David Murray al lang geen onbekende meer. Met een oneindige lijst van albums en concerten op zijn naam behoort hij tot één van de grotere saxofonisten. De verwachting is dat er ook nummers uit het repertoire van David Murray en Macy Gray gespeeld gaan worden." Op de CD heeft Gregory Porter een grotere rol dan Gray: Porter zingt drie songs, Gray maar één. Mensen die Porters eigen platen iets te 'slick' vinden komen hier aan hun trekken: zijn doorleefde souljazzstem, omgeven door Murray's ietwat rafelige saxsound is een gouden combinatie!
"Tenor saxophonist David Murray and his octet don't play note-for-note recreations but allow Trane's searching spirit to dominate the proceedings. Murray shines on all tracks, switching between tenor and bass clarinet. The octet featuring D.D. Jackson (p), Craig Harris (tmb), Ravi Best (t), Rasul Siddik (t), James Spaulding (as, fl), Jaribu Shahid (b), and Mark Johnson (d) most of the time sound like twice the number of musicians. Especially on the raucous big band versions of "Giant Steps" and "Lazy Bird." However, they can achieve a complete turnaround when playing the ballad "Naima" or "India," which becomes an ethereal, haunting mix (complete with tabla) sounding more like electric period Miles Davis unplugged than Coltrane's arrangement. The proceedings wind down with an engaging 15-minute version of "A Love Supreme: Part 1: Acknowledgment" proving Murray has studied not only the music of John Coltrane, but like him insists on applying his individuality through his horn." "Tenorsaxofonist/basklarinettist Murray bracht jarenlang lawines aan platen uit waarop hij als een razende tekeerging: lange solos, steevast uitmondend in stratosferisch gepiep en gefluit. Maar hij is rustiger geworden, en zijn Black Saint Quartet is een van zijn beste en meest uitgebalanceerde groepen. Op deze liveopnamen horen we hem met de charismatische drummer Hamid Drake, een eenmans- percussieorkest dat continu de interactie met de anderen aangaat. De jonge pianist Lafayette Gilchrist is een ware ontdekking, een ouderwets tweehandige speler met ontembare swing. Bassist Jaribu Shahid houdt al dat vurige enthousiasme bijeen met veel autoriteit. Sterke stukken schrijven met een memorabele melodielijn kan Murray nog steeds. Ook zijn spel op basklarinet is gerijpt, hij laat dat wispelturige instrument romig romantisch klinken.
