Hard Workin' Man: The Jack Nitzsche Story Vol. 2 (2006)

"On this follow-up to the superb "The Jack Nitzsche Story: Hearing Is Believing 1962-1979" (2005), the compilers have attempted to give some picture of how broad the man's musical palate could be, and what's most surprising is that as these songs sway from the hard-edged blues of "Hard Workin' Man" (with Captain Beefheart wailing over a band anchored by Ry Cooder), the snarling garage punk of the Gas Company's "Blow Your Mind," the lush neo-psych grandeur of "Porpoise Song" by the Monkees, and the beautifully crafted studio pop of Bobby Vee's "Like Someone in Love." A common thread manifests itself throughout - Nitzsche had the ability to bring something unexpected whenever he took an act into the studio, and each time he came up with something that fit the song (and the artist) like a charm. He also had a real vision of how to cast the players for a session - most folks would never have dreamed of putting John Lee Hooker, Miles Davis and Taj Mahal on the same number." Hearing Is Believing - The Jack Nitzsche Story 1962-1979 (2005)

"Geniaal componist/producer/arrangeur. (HvdH, Oor)

One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest (1975)

"A film that helped to cement Jack Nicholson's reputation as an actor willing to take roles on the bleeding edge, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest was also notable for giving director Milos Forman a solid position in American cinema...and for giving composer Jack Nitzsche a place to show what he could do. As it is, the edgy nature of the film extends into the score, giving it a profoundly disturbing feel at times -- even when it appears to be relatively normal. The music has a tendency to always be a little off-kilter, and from time to time it tilts completely over into a strange little world of its own (something very familiar to fans of Van Dyke Parks, with whom Nitzsche worked quite a bit). It's a pity that this score has faded from sight over the time since its 1991 remastering; the music has certainly continued to stand up well over time." (Steven E. McDonald, Allmusic)

Performance (1970)

"This soundtrack captures the various moods of a spacy film starring Mick Jagger as a reclusive rock star whose home is invaded by a fleeing gangster. On the opening track, Randy Newman is driven hard by Ry Cooder's fierce slide guitar. If you listen closely, you can hear the laconic Newman almost crack up laughing as he rocks like never before or since. Other musical notables include Merry Clayton and Buffy Sainte-Marie. Veteran producer Jack Nitzsche wrote most of the tunes, a notable exception being "Memo From Turner," penned by Jagger and Keith Richards. Listening to only the soundtrack, you miss the bizarre context of the movie, but this is one interesting listen." (Allmusic)
