"Les Elemens by Rebel (a pupil of Lully) is a choreographed suite with vivid programmatic content. This is startlingly evident in the opening bars, a representation of Chaos in which all the notes of the harmonic scale are united in a single cluster. Goebel and his Musica Antiqua have always revelled in this kind of extrovert gesture and the listener is captivated by Rebel's often astonishing charivari. The remainder of the suite is harmonically plain, though Rebel maintains a lively musical interest. What a contrast between this and the Telemann sonata which follows. For though the idiom retains a distinctly French bias, the spirit of the piece has a seriousness of purpose which deeply penetrates the elegant rococo veneer of his trios and quartets. Lastly comes ballet music by Gluck. The delightful Alessandro has evident French affinities. Its 8 movements are effectively varied and deftly orchestrated. Especially the Chaconne is impressive. "Juan Kruz Diaz de Garaio Esnaola, Spaans danser, choreograaf en musicus, brengt Vivaldi en Rebel als choreografisch concert. Het is te zien op deze DVD en ook op het Festival Oude Muziek 2009 in Utrecht. Tijdens 4 Elements danst hij zelf door alle scheppingsstadia heen, van chaos naar aarde, water, vuur en lucht. Bij 4 Seasons zet hij de musici in beweging. Ik wil de naïviteit en onschuld van Vivaldis compositie als nieuw laten klinken. Maar hoe krijg je spontaniteit terug in muziek die zo verschrikkelijk is gemangeld. Ik moet de musici uit hun routine halen. Diaz de Garaio Esnaola laat ze op het podium gekken en dollen met elkaar. Ze geven met hun lippen rode linten door en bestrooien elkaar met bladeren, vlokken en doeken. Solovioliste Midori Seiler schrikt voor niets terug; de Japanse rijdt rustig vioolspelend paardje op zijn rug. Ze moesten mij vertrouwen dat hun motoriek niet geforceerd of dommig zou ogen.
