"Hummel only wrote three string quartets, and here they are, played by the Delmé Quartet with a nice appreciation of their nature. Hummel wrote them by 1804, therefore in the knowledge of effectively all Haydn's quartets and of Beethoven's Op. 18 set. The most remarkable is No. 1, which takes note of his great predecessor and great rival in several ways. There is the skilled contrapuntal play of the four parts, the exploration of novel textures, the melodic liveliness and grace. More specifically, Hummel has noted how Haydn developed new and often wittily deceptive key relationships. Hummel is, of course, neither Haydn nor Beethoven. He lacks Haydn's wonderful ingenuities, the playing with the listener so that things so often turn out to be quite different from what they first seemed; he lacks Beethoven's dynamic potency. Johann Nepomuk Hummel, friend, rival in love and contemporary of Beethoven, pupil of Mozart, Haydn and Salieri, is best known today for his early concerto for trumpet (1803). He was however one of the greatest pianists of the early 19th century. In 1804 Hummel took over the position of concertmaster to Prince Nikolaus Esterhazy, Haydn's old position. Haydn had supported his one time pupil's candidacy. Hummel continued his teacher's work by composing 5 masses and shorter works for the princely family, and the his masses follow on directly from Haydn's last six great settings. Hummel's masses are impressive works, and can hold their own in the company of the masterpieces by Haydn, Schubert and later Bruckner. Hummel's skill with the orchestra is apparent at every turn and these works are brilliantly written for the choir, soloists and orchestra alike. (bron: Brilliant)

Deze CD van het sub-label van Vox, Turnabout, verschenen in 1992,komt uit een serie waarin o.m. aandacht wordt besteed aan mindere bekend 19e-eeuws pianorepertoire van componisten die in hun tijd invloedrijk waren. De CD's hebben als (catalogus)titel: Werken voor piano en orkest.
Deze CD is vooral bijzonder door het concert van Stamitz. Het is gereconstrueerd uit teruggevonden manuscripten door Alan Boustead en dit is de CD-premiere. Het is overigens niet 100% zeker dat Stamitz de componist is. Het zou ook van J.G. Holzbogen kunnen zijn, maar muziekwetenschappers vinden het aannemelijker dat Stamitz de schrijver is. Naast de overbekende concerten van Hummel en Haydn is het werk van de obscure componist Hertel een relatieve curiositeit.
