"Op 18 februari 1961 was het Amsterdamse Concertgebouw weer eens een Jazz Philharmonic. Impresario Norman Granz had het afgehuurd voor de twee raspaarden uit zijn stal: pianist Oscar Peterson (dat concert is ook door Fondamenta op CD uitgebracht - HB) en zangeres Ella Fitzgerald. In april 2017 bracht het Nederlands Jazz Archief al een CD uit met concerten die zij in 1957 en 1960 in Amsterdam gaf ("s Wonderful"). Op "Mack The Knife" na brengt ze in 1961 een volledig nieuwe set. Fitzgerald gaf op de bühne altijd alles. Zo ook hier. De songs kregen elk de vereiste intensiteit, zoals de ballad "How Long Has This Been Going On". Ook "My Funny Valentine" staat op het programma. Als waarschuwing vooraf zegt ze dat ze het deze avond anders zingt: bijna teder. Net als het daaropvolgende "I Got A Crush On You". De stemming wordt wat uitbundiger vanaf "Lorelei". In de uitsmijters "Mack The Knife" en "Saint Louis Blues" excelleert ze en maakte ze een opwindend eind aan haar set." (Hessel Fluitman, Jazzflits)
Alle Amerikaanse Jazz at the Philharmonic- concertopnames van zangeres Ella Fitzgerald zijn voor het eerst op één album verschenen. Het betreft materiaal dat van 1949 tot 1954 werd opgenomen. Getz, although identified with the "cool" school, thrived on competition and is both relaxed and combative on the up-tempo explorations of "It Don't Mean a Thing" and "Impromptu."" Twee albums van de gitarist op één CD. "Nothing But The Blues" uit 1957 is gemaakt in kwintetbezetting: "Guitarist Herb Ellis considers "Nothing But The Blues" his favorite personal album and it is easy to see why. With trumpeter Roy Eldridge and tenor saxophonist Stan Getz contributing contrasting but equally rewarding solos and lots of inspired riffing while bassist Ray Brown and drummer Stan Levey join Ellis in the pianoless rhythm section, these performances have plenty of color and drive. Ellis does indeed stick to the blues during the original eight selections yet there is also a surprising amount of variety." (Scott Yanow, Allmusic) Het andere album is "Meets Jimmy Giuffre" uit 1959 met nonet inclusief 4-koppige blazerssectie én collega-gitarist Jim Hall. Giuffre speelt tenor- en baritonsax en schreef de arrangementen voor het hele album. Giuffre was in 1959 nog niet de avantgardist die hij later zou worden, maar geeft wel een klassieke 'touch' met zijn nauwgezette en ingenieuze arrangementen.

Een duogitaarplaat met de normaliter in swingblues grossierende Robbilard op 't linkerkanaal en veteraan Ellis (speelde met Peterson, Ellington, Armstrong, e.v.a.) rechts. Vooral een relaxte plaat in oude, 'gentle' swingstijl.

Each song sounds as if the group could be a working quartet, due to the great interaction between the trio and each guest. So it's very easy to recommend this very enjoyable disc." (Allmusic)
"This DVD features seven titles by Herb Ellis on guitar, accompanied by Dave Maslow on bass, but it is the expected fine playing by the veteran from the Oscar Peterson Trio, Casa Loma Orchestra, and so many other legendary ensembles that makes this DVD a keeper. Recorded live in February of 1986 at the Triangle Bar in Minneapolis, Minnesota it looks like a pretty good Public Access TV presentation -- though the long shot is definitely a bit blurry. On a sonic level the material sounds good and the maestro effortlessly lets the notes pour out. Ellis and Maslow perform "Days of Wine and Roses," "Here's That Rainy Day," "Sweet Georgia Brown," and other familiar tunes in their brief set. Very entertaining work. There's a four-page biography, a ten-and-a-half minute interview, a photo of Ellis' Gibson guitar, and a three-page discography. It's short and sweet but as there are less than a handful of DVDs available from Ellis it is a most welcome addition to the collection." (Joe Viglione, Allmusic)
"Herb Ellis, Barney Kessel, and Charlie Byrd made five recordings under the banner Great Guitars for Concord between 1976 and 1982; this two-CD set combines both of their concert performances. With bassist Joe Byrd and either Jimmie Smith or Chuck Redd on drums, the guitarists complement one another's playing throughout both shows, with the two former Oscar Peterson sidemen on electric guitar and Byrd sticking to acoustic guitar. They primarily stick to standards of the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s during the 1980 set taped at the Paul Masson Mountain Winery. Byrd, best known for helping to launch the bossa nova craze during the early '60s, shines in the extended workout of Antonio Carlos Jobim's "So Danço Samba" and a solo performance of "You Took Advantage of Me." The second disc comes from a 1982 concert at Charlie's Georgetown in Washington, D.C., and features a more wide-ranging program.
