Sphere (2023)

"Sphere is another beautiful album by the 78-year-old Swedish pianist and composer Bobo Stenson who, with a unique style, brings his trio to new heights. The musicians involved in the project are Anders Jormin, a poetic bassist who has been accompanying him since the mid ‘80s, and Jon Fält, a sensitive drummer who first joined them in 2008 for the album "Cantando" (ECM). Stenson, who played with legendary saxophonists Charles Lloyd and Jan Garbarek as well as with trumpeters Don Cherry and Tomasz Stanko, doesn’t hide the classical intonation on Bäck’s “Communion Psalm”, touching our souls with an introspective sense of freedom. His superlative melodies are even more intense on the exquisite “The Red Flower”, on which the bassist and the drummer build a subtle, stably rooted foundation." (Jazztrail, 4 uit 5 sterren)

Dansere Dansere ; Witchi-Tai-To ; Sart (2012)

"As much as this 3-CD box traces Garbarek's rapid evolution from the greater extremes of free improvisation to a more form-based approach that would become the foundation of much of his life's work ever since, it also documents the emergence of ECM's voice as a label. While label head/producer Manfred Eicher's initial goal to produce recordings of improvisation-based music (jazz, in the broadest possible definition) with the clarity and transparency of classical recordings was realized early on, it was in the ensuing decade that the often-used (and often misunderstood) term "The ECM Sound" came into being. If each of the three recordings that comprise this box couldn't be more different from one another, there remains a common underlying thread that connects them, and which goes beyond the obvious participation of three musicians Garbarek, Stenson and Norwegian drummer Jon Christensen and engineer Jan Erik Kongshaug on all three discs." Monk By Five (2000)

Windogur (2000)

"Influenced by a wide variety of music, Lena Willemark has not been afraid to take chances, and the Swedish folk-pop singer takes her share on Windogur. This introspective effort, recorded in Stockholm in 1999, underscores Willemark's eclectic, unpredictable nature and showcases how many different styles of music have affected her. Swedish folk is her foundation, but Willemark is no purist and liberally incorporates elements of pop and post-bop jazz. In fact, two of the musicians she employs on Windogur, - pianist Bobo Stenson and bassist Palle Danielsson - are Swedish jazz musicians who command a lot of respect in European jazz circles. There are also traces of East European and Middle Eastern music on some of the material. As experimental and risk-taking as Willemark is, Windogur never sounds forced or unnatural, all of the selections sound very organic, and Willemark has no problem bringing them to life." (Allmusic)

Plays John Coltrane

Plays John Coltrane (2007)

"Guitarist Max Schultz applies his Santana-like chops to several Trane standards on Plays Coltrane. (...) Schultz' ambitious original "Song for John" could serve as an overture for the album since it contains and suggests thematic and stylistic elements (eg, the four-note bass figure from "Acknowledgement") that recall several Coltrane tunes. Plays Coltrane is generally a quartet album but there are a few departures from that format. The ballad "Central Park West" is marred slightly because Schultz and pianist Bobo Stenson initially can't quite get out of each other's way, like dancers stepping on each other's toes. They overcome their missteps, however, and their flawless simpatico on "After the Rain" leads one to clamor for an album of duets. There are no missteps, however, on the excellent bass-guitar duet on "Welcome" between Schultz and bassist Dan Berglund's full-throated, relentless arco." (All About Jazz)
