Ballads - Deluxe Edition (1962)

"Throughout Coltrane's discography there are a handful of albums that split his listening camp into factions. Generally, these occur in his extreme later-period works. As a contrast, "Ballads" is often criticized as too easy, and as too much of a compromise between Coltrane and Impulse!. But it's a perfectly fine album of Coltrane doing what he always did -- explore new avenues and modes in an inexhaustible search for personal and artistic enlightenment. Here, he looks into the warmer side of things, a path he would take with both Johnny Hartman and Duke Ellington. Here he lays out for Tyner mostly, and the results positively shimmer at times. He's not aggressive - instead, he's introspective and at times even predictable, but that is precisely the album's draw. The bonus disc contains no less than five versions of "Greensleeves" and seven versions of "It's Easy to Remember" - often slightly more aggressive and exploratory than the album version - plus two other alternate versions." The Carnegie Hall Concert (2024)

"Het Carnegie Hall Concert in februari 1971 was een benefietshow voor het Integral Yoga Institute, opgericht door Swami Satchidananda, de goeroe van Alice Coltrane. Er zijn vier uitgebreide uitvoeringen, te beginnen met "Journey In Satchidananda". A love supreme - The complete masters Super deluxe edition (2015)

"Een van de meest invloedrijke en complete jazzplaten aller tijden, iets meer dan een halfuur, opgenomen in 2 dagen tijd in december 1964. Nadat Coltrane zijn verslavingen had overwonnen en rust had gevonden bij vrouw Alice, ging hij op zoek naar spirituele verdieping in zijn muziek. Met het klassieke kwartet met Jimmy Garrison (bas), McCoy Tyner (piano) en Elvin Jones (drums) nam hij een serie platen op, waaronder "Crescent" en "Sun Ship", maar op "A Love Supreme" komt alles samen. "'Blue World' bevat nieuwe versies van de Coltrane-nummers 'Naima', 'Village Blues', 'Traneing In' en 'Like Sonny'. Het enige onbekende stuk is het titelnummer van het album, dat klinkt als een vertraagde variatie van zijn kijk op de popstandaard 'Out of This World', die hij eerder had opgenomen voor zijn album 'Coltrane' uit 1962. De 'Blue World'-opnamen met Jimmy Garrison op contrabas, pianist McCoy Tyner en Elvin Jones op drums, dateren uit de tussenliggende periode van de albums 'Crescent' en 'A Love Supreme' en waren bedoeld als soundtrack voor de Canadese kunstfilm 'Le chat dans le sac' van filmmaker Gilles Groulx. The group that the saxophonist had assembled for Coltrane in 1962, a band that had been together a little while and had performed together at the Village Vanguard (the tracks that include the quartet without Eric Dolphy from "Impressions" are included here) in a variety of settings, is almost nothing like the band that made "Kulu Se Mama" in 1965. Bye Bye Blackbird John Coltrane His Greatest Concert Performance (1981)

"Bye Bye Blackbird only contains 36 minutes of music, but the quality is quite high. John Coltrane and his Quartet (pianist McCoy Tyner, bassist Jimmy Garrison, and drummer Elvin Jones) perform extended versions of "Bye Bye Blackbird" and "Traneing In" that gradually build up to great intensity. Well recorded, this European concert (of uncertain origin) is worth hearing, particularly by Coltrane collectors who already have his more essential recordings, although it does not quite live up to the label that producer Norman Granz gave it: "His Greatest Concert Performance."" Living Space (1965)

Opnamen uit juni 1965 van het legendarische John Coltrane Quartet, die pas in 1998 in deze vorm als album zijn uitgebracht. Verspreid over diverse compilaties waren deze 5 stukken al wel bekend (in het geval van het titelnummer zelfs met posthuum toegevoegde strijkerssectie(!), die hier gelukkig weer weggelaten is), maar zó wordt dit werk pas goed recht gedaan. We horen een intens musicerend kwartet, dat liefhebbers van werken als "A Love Supreme" en "Ascension" zich niet mogen laten ontgaan.
