"Apart from David Sanborn, probably no living saxophonist has a more recognizable voice than Jan Garbarek. The music (much of which was composed for soundtracks) is quintessential Garbarek, full of world music influences that have characterized his work since the 1970s. Garbarek's resonant, carefully articulated tenor and soprano tone suits the spacious, minor/modal themes. He's as much a singer as instrumentalist. Garbarek also plays digital synthesizers, mostly as string or flute pads underneath the folkish melodies. The record's most notable secondary player is Garbarek's ECM labelmate, the bassist Eberhard Weber, whose lyric sensibility is a virtual mirror of Garbarek's. This is quiet, contemplative music for the most part -- attractive, but not superficially pretty. Its grooves are less celebratory than melancholic. The album’s striking lyrical quality to Benjamin’s compositions open up many possibilities for his colleagues to inject the music with their own character. The chemistry between pianist Benjamin Lackner and Jérôme Regard can be traced back to 2006, when Jérôme first joined Benjamin’s trio. Various incarnations of the trio produced six albums between 2004 and 2019 – Jérôme appears on half of them. Now having to expand his compositional framework from trio to quartet, Benjamin recognizes new opportunities and finds freedom in having a melodic partner on horn. "Voor zijn alweer vierde album voor ECM verzet Manu Katché de bakens naar een lichtvoetiger geluid. Maar hij doet dit met een nieuwe groep, slim geselecteerde, muzikanten net zo aanstekelijk als op voorgaande albums. Ooit was hij een veelgevraagd pop-sessiedrummer en de afgelopen jaren was hij alszodanig weer te zien in een reünie van Peter Gabriels "So"-tourneebezetting. Toch legt hij zich al een jaar of tien voornamelijk toe op jazz. Het openingsnummer is een swingend stuk latin jazz, met spetterende percussie door drie gastpercussionisten. Maar dit is zeker geen latin jazz-album, want vanaf titelstuk "Unstatic" horen we de moderne post bop die we ook van eerdere Katché-jazzalbums kennen. Saxofonist Tore Brunborg is een opvallende solist in het geheel, op 5 tracks tegenwicht krijgend van gasttrombonist Nils Landgren.
