"This album, recorded in 1968 with a stellar band, was not issued until 1980. This is Hill at his most visionary. From hard- and post bop frames come modal and tonal inquiries of staggering complexity. Check out the sinister modal blues that is "Fish 'N' Rice" with its Eastern-tinged blues and loping horn lines around Hill's knotty fills in the head and choruses. In "Partitions" the steaming head is so rigorously tangled it's only the counterpoint of Hill's piano that makes an exit possible, with deep blues underpinnings and strident swinging soul. The title cut dances Afro-Cuban in the head, but Hill's piano is in a minor modal groove, with Higgins playing a textural, syncopated four-four as Sproles' punches on the two and four as the solos begin winding through the modes, bringing back the blues on tags. "Why any critic would think that Hank Mobley was at the end of his creative spark in 1963 is ridiculous, as this fine session proves. By 1963, Mobley had undergone a transformation of tone. Replacing the scintillating airiness of his late-'50s sides was a harder, more strident, almost honking one, due in part to the influence of John Coltrane and in part to Mobley's deeper concentration on the expressing blues feeling in his trademark hard bop tunes. Mobley assembled a crack band for this blues-drenched hard-rollicking set made up of material written by either him or trumpeter Lee Morgan. Other members of the ensemble were pianist Andrew Hill, drummer Philly Joe Jones, and bassist John Ore. "Jimmy Woods maakte slechts twee platen. Als sideman zijn we ook snel klaar. Op twee platen horen we hem soleren, naast een handjevol nummers op een paar andere. De eigenzinnige pianist voltooide "Change" vlak na "Compulsion!!!!!". Ondanks dat het album helemaal af was, liet Blue Note het in 1966 op de plank liggen. Pas 41 jaar later, vlak na zijn dood, volgde een CD-release. Waarschijnlijk vond het in mainstream gespecialiseerde Blue Note het vrije "Compulsion!!!!!" al vér gaan, "Change" is nog wat weerbarstiger. Maar minstens zo intrigerend. Inderdaad valt dit onder Hills meest vrije werk. Het kost even moeite om structuur te horen in het heftige spel van Rivers (ts), Booker (b), Moses (d) en de pianist zelf en de beukende blokakkoorden die Hill op klavecimbel(!) speelt zijn 'something else', maar de doorpakkende luisteraar wordt beloond. Het album voelt aan als een suite, dat je net als Coltrane's late werk toch weer op de benen terugzet. "Knotty, jagged and abstruse, Hill's music from this period can be difficult, but yields great rewards. "Joe Henderson's second recording as a leader features a very strong supporting cast: trumpeter Kenny Dorham (one of Henderson's earliest supporters), pianist Andrew Hill, bassist Eddie Khan, and drummer Pete La Roca. Together they perform three Dorham and two Henderson originals, advanced music that was open to the influence of the avant-garde while remaining in the hard bop idiom. The up-tempo blues "Teeter Totter" contrasts with the four minor-toned pieces and, even if none of these songs became standards, the playing is consistently brilliant and unpredictable. Eén der meest betreurenswaardige gebeurtenissen in de jazz in 2007 was het heengaan van Andrew Hill, eigenzinnig pianist, wiens spel even bonkig als poetisch kon zijn en die altijd prachtige groepen om zich heen verzamelde die de ruimte kregen uit te blinken in hoogst originele arrangementen. "Point Of Departure" is z'n bekendste plaat, vlak voor z'n dood (die hij aan voelde komen) maakte hij het indrukwekkende "Time Lines". "Compulsion!!!!!" (één van z'n vele platen met uitroeptekens in de titel) is wellicht een van z'n meest eigenzinnige. Met tenorist John Gilmore, vooral bekend om z'n werk met Sun Ra, heeft hij een lekker tegendraadse muzikant in z'n band, die echter behoorlijk in toom wordt gehouden. Mede door de Afrikaanse percussie van Nadi Qamar en Renaud Simmons blijft het resultaat behoorlijk toegankelijk en groovend. En Freddie Hubbard (trompet, bugel) zorgt voor weldadige warmte tussen de soms hoekige paden die Hills piano kiest. Geremasterd door de man die 't indertijd zelf opnam: Rudy van Gelder.
"In deze fascinerende puntje-van-je-stoel-muziek zijn er nauwelijks pakkende themas en ritmes; solos zijn verweven met de ritmesectie. Hills pianospel is, als dat van Monk, sober. Bij Hill zijn improvisaties geen omspelingen van de melodie, maar abstractere frasen die er zijdelings naar verwijzen. Plaat uit 2000 (z'n 1ste sinds 1990!) van invloedrijk pianist, al sinds jaren '50 actief. Met sterk nieuw sextet (met oa saxofonisten Marty Ehrlich en Greg Tardy bewijst hij nog eigenzinnig en creatief te zijn in drijvende semi-vrije postbop.
Uit 2002. De pianist/componist studeerde ooit bij de invloedrijke componist Hindemith en heeft opmerkelijke componeer- en arrangeermethoden in de jazz geintroduceerd, zoals ook te horen in deze intrigerende stukken voor 12-koppig ensemble.
