See You At The Fair (1964)

"Ben Webster's final American recording was one of his greatest. At 55, the tenor saxophonist was still very much in his prime but considered out of style in the U.S. He would soon permanently move to Europe where he was better appreciated. This CD has the nine selections originally included on the LP of the same name, a quartet set with either Hank Jones or Roger Kellaway on piano, bassist Richard Davis, and drummer Osie Johnson. Webster's tone has rarely sounded more beautiful than on "Someone to Watch Over Me" and "Our Love Is Here to Stay." In addition, one song from the same session (but originally released on a sampler) and two tunes featuring Webster on an Oliver Nelson date ("More Blues and the Abstract Truth") wrap up this definitive CD." (Scott Yanow, Allmusic; 5 uit 5 sterren)

Karma (1969)

"After the death of Coltrane, while there were many seeking to make a spiritual music that encompassed his ideas; no one came up with the goods until Sanders on this 1969 date. There are only 2 tracks: the 32-plus minute "The Creator Has a Master Plan" and the 5 1/2-minute "Colours." "Creator" begins with a quote from "A Love Supreme," a nod to Coltrane. But something else emerges here as well: Sanders' own deep commitment to lyricism and his now inherent knowledge of Eastern breathing and modal techniques. At 18 minutes it explodes, rushing into a silence that is profound as it is noisy in its approach. Sanders is playing microphonics and blowing to the heavens and Thomas is screaming. They are leaving the material world entirely. When they arrive at the next plane, a new kind of lyricism emerges. There is nothing to describe the exhilaration that is felt when this tune ends, except that "Colours" was the only track that could follow it. You cannot believe it until you hear it." Out To Lunch (1964)

"Out to Lunch stands as Eric Dolphy's magnum opus, an absolute pinnacle of avant-garde jazz in any form or era. Its rhythmic complexity was perhaps unrivaled since Dave Brubeck's Time Out, and its five Dolphy originals -- the jarring Monk tribute "Hat and Beard," the aptly titled "Something Sweet, Something Tender," the weirdly jaunty flute showcase "Gazzelloni," the militaristic title track, the drunken lurch of "Straight Up and Down" -- were a perfect balance of structured frameworks, carefully calibrated timbres, and generous individual freedom." Compulsion!!!!! (Rudy Van Gelder Edition) (1966)

Life Time (Rudy Van Gelder Edition) (1964)

"Drummer Tony Williams' first recording as a leader (made when he was 18 and still billed as Anthony Williams) gave him an opportunity to utilize an advanced group of musicians: tenor saxophonist Sam Rivers, vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson, pianist Herbie Hancock, and both Richard Davis and Gary Peacock on bass. Williams wrote all four of the pieces and has a different combination of players on each song. The freely improvised "Memory" features Hutcherson, Hancock, and Williams in some colorful and at times spacy interplay; "Barb's Song to the Wizard" is a Hancock-Ron Carter duet; "Tomorrow Afternoon" has Rivers, Peacock and Williams in a trio; and all of the musicians (except Hutcherson) are on the sidelong "2 Pieces of One." The unpredictable music holds one's interest; a very strong debut for the masterful drummer." (allmusic)

All Night Long - Live At 'Village Vanguard', 1959 (1993)

'Well You Needn't' van Monk en 'Just A Sittin'And Rockin' van Ellington. (naar AMG)

The Freedom Book

The Freedom Book (1964)

"In some ways tenor saxophonist Booker Ervin was the archetypal jazz player for the post-bop 1960s, combining the tradition of Texas sax with just the hint of edgy modernism, a sort of the Delta-meets-Morocco sound so accessible that it is easy to miss the chances Ervin took with his music. Although his career was short (cancer claimed him in the summer of 1970 when he was just shy of his 40th birthday), Ervin still managed to record some 20 albums as a frontman, including this fine session, which finds him working with a rhythm section of Jaki Byard on piano, Richard Davis on bass, and Alan Dawson on drums. Recorded on December 3, 1963, The Freedom Book is a near perfect set of modern hard bop, ranging just far enough out there to feel fresh but retaining a strong lifeline to bop tradition. A bonus track, an interesting and brief treatment of Victor Young's "Stella by Starlight," is included on the 2007 edition, further capping off a wonderful album." (Steve Leggett, Allmusic)
