Dit is een tot nu toe onbekend 'Duits' album van pianist Bill Evans. Het werd in 1968 door het label MPS opgenomen, maar nooit eerder uitgebracht. De producenten Hans Georg Brunner-Schwer en Joachim-Ernst Berendt namen het trio van Bill Evans indertijd mee naar een studio in het Zwarte Woud. Ze zouden spelen, opnemen en daarna wel zien of het mogelijk was om het album uit te brengen. Evans stond immers onder contract bij een andere platenmaatschappij. Nadat de plaat op 20 juni 1968 in Villingen werd opgenomen gebeurde er echter niet veel meer. De opnamen bleven in het archief liggen. Tijdens het evenement Jazzahead 2013 kwam Zev Feldman van Resonance Records het bestaan van het album ter ore. Hij besloot na een eerste beluistering tot een release. De sessie, met Bill Evans solo, maar ook samen met Eddie Gomez op bas en Jack DeJohnette op drums, verschijnt op nu op dubbel-CD. Het is het enige studioalbum in deze bezetting van het trio. On A Friday Evening (1975)

"Captured in 1975, On a Friday Evening is an engaging and deeply intimate album that finds pianist Bill Evans and his trio in performance at Oil Can Harry's in Vancouver, British Columbia. Recorded by radio host Gary Barclay, the album was initially broadcast on Barclay's CHQM jazz show before languishing unheard for the next 40 years. Fully restored, this 2021 archival release finds Evans backed by one of his best latter-career rhythm sections featuring bassist Eddie Gomez and drummer Eliot Zigmund. Radio broadcasts of live concerts were not unheard of in the '60s and '70s, and On a Friday Evening works as a nice companion album to the similar 2017 radio restoration On a Monday Evening, which featured the same lineup and some of the same tunes. That said, On a Friday Evening is an even better sounding restoration and truly represents the intricate group dynamics and virtuosity they'd developed on tour together." (Allmusic)

In Japan opgenomen smoothjazz-album van de trompettist, omringd door een all-star-veteranenritmesectie: pianist Hank Jones, bassist Eddie Gomez en drummer Jimmie Cobb. Het geheel wordt bijgestaan door een strijkorkest o.l.v. Masahiko Satoh. De groep speelt een reeks ballads, meest standards, die door de strijkersarrangementen extra 'smooth' zijn gemaakt.

"Judy Niemack is a gifted vocalist who moved to Europe to make her mark as a recording artist. Following a series of impressive releases for the now defunct Free Lance, she made this rewarding session for the German unit of Sony. Joined by an outstanding band that includes guitarist Jean Francois Prins (her husband), bassist Eddie Gomez, vibraphonist David Friedman, and percussionist Café, Niemack's wide-ranging choice of material and infectious voice keep things interesting, with many of the pieces having a "time" theme in their titles. She penned hopeful lyrics to Pat Metheny's "Talk Awhile" (originally titled "[It's Just] Talk") and delightfully scats in unison along with Prins and Friedman. Niemack's subtle arrangement of "Sometime Ago" is an object of beauty, while her playful side comes across in the sexy rendition of Cyndi Lauper's "Time After Time." Bill Evans & Monica Zetterlund (1991)

"Bill Evans' career in live settings is well documented. This 1975 set in Sweden is unique as it is one of his rare outings accompanying a vocalist in concert, Swedish singer Monica Zetterlund, who sits in with him for the latter half of this show. The first half features four numbers by his trio with bassist Eddie Gomez and drummer Eliot Zigmund, kicking off with a tantalizing version of "Sugar Plum". Evans had accompanied Zetterlund on one of her early recordings, but it is surprising to hear their reunion on a club date, since he rarely played with a vocalist in front of an audience. The Swedish vocalist has long been underrated, in spite of her impressive recordings. She is an understated singer, yet true to each song, beginning with an intimate "Come Rain or Come Shine." Evans' inventive backing for her in "What's New" is a highlight. Zetterlund reaches her emotional peak with her striking take of Michel Legrand's "Once Upon a Summertime."" (Allmusic)

An American Diary (1995)

Album uit 1995, volgens Allmusic het beste solo-album van de ondermeer van Steps (Ahead) bekende vibrafonist.. Mike Manieri (1938) speelde op zijn 14-de al vibrafoon. Hij is er uitermate goed ingeslaagd de composities van componisten die je niet snel op jazzplaten geïnterpreteerd ziet, o.a. Leonard Bernstein en Samuel Barber, maar ook Frank Zappa, een totaal andere dimensie te geven. Daarnaast staat er eigen werk op en dragen de bandleden alhier, zoals saxofonist Joe Lovano en drummer Peter Erskine, thema's aan.
