"The soundtrack to a 1972 blaxploitation film featured songs written and performed by Bobby Womack, as well as a musical score by J.J. Johnson. Although the inconsistency of the approach precluded a musical statement along the lines of Superfly, it's an interesting find for those looking for little-heeded early-'70s soul with funk and rock influences. Womack's cuts count among his better material, and even if the title track cops much of its attitude from Superfly, it has a tough soul-rock groove of its own. "If You Want My Love" is a good grainy ballad, "Quicksand" a propulsive number well-suited for action scenes, and "Do It Right" is in the mold of James Brown, but more rock-oriented. Johnson's instrumental contributions set a nice period soul-jazz mood, and there are nifty periodic washes of electronic effects in both composers' contributions." Considering the time period, this date remains way ahead of the Latin-tinged and hard bop music that would follow. It would be difficult to assess the sextet being a step below the larger group effort, but only because it is much less Afro-Cuban. Eerste samenwerking, uit 1953, van Winding en Johnson, dat een vrij beroemd trombone-duo zou worden, dat in eerste instantie maar vrij kort bestond (twee jaar), maar nog meer faam kreeg door de diverse latere reunieën. Hier blijkt dat men echter met nóg twee trombonisten aanving. En het wordt nog leuker met de top-ritmesectie: naast drummer Arthur Taylor zijn dat namelijk pianist John Lewis (een van z'n zeldzame opnamen buiten The Monder Jazz Quartet om) en bassist Charles Mingus. Deze tot één tot de rand gevulde CD samengevoegde sessie verscheen nl. als twee albums op Mingus' eigen Debut Records, waarop tussen 1952 en 1957 een breed scala aan bebop-gerelateerde albums verschenen (en waarop hij ook zijn eigen leider-debuut maakte).
