Soul Grooves (1999)

"Accompanied by the top-notch rhythm section of organist Joey DeFrancesco and drummer Jeff "Tain" Watts (as well as assorted horn players and a tabla player), Paul Bollenback delivers a program of soul and R&B classics, beginning and ending with Stevie Wonder songs ("Too High" and "Visions") and including such other chestnuts as Otis Redding's "Dock of the Bay" and Ashford & Simpson's "Ain't No Mountain High Enough." The results are consistently pleasing, and sometimes surprising -- "Dock of the Bay" is taken at a startlingly brisk tempo with funky drums stuttering underneath; "My Girl" is played with a broad sense of swing, to nice effect. Bollenback's style isn't terribly distinctive (he spends a lot of time on Montgomery-esque octave runs), but his playing is always excellent. The album's sole disappointment is the goopy solo acoustic arrangement of "Visions" that closes the program." (Allmusic)

Nights Of Ballads & Blues (1963)

"This McCoy Tyner release is a low-key, after-hours affair. Far removed from the intensity of work with then-boss John Coltrane, Tyner stretches out on a fine mix of standards and bebop classics. The pianist, of course, always had his own fleet and rich way with ballads. His ballad style is even touched with a bit of sentimentality, which thankfully is kept in check by a bevy of tasteful lines. Backed by the topnotch rhythm tandem of bassist Steve Davis and drummer Lex Humphries, Tyner finds the room to develop classic statements on highlights like Monk's "'Round Midnight," Ellington and Strayhorn's "Satin Doll," and Parker's "Star Eyes." On more easeful tracks like "For Heaven's Sake," Tyner utilizes his block chord approach to meditative and romantic effect. Rounded out by solid blues sides like "Blue Monk" and Tyner's own "Groove Waltz," Nights of Ballads & Blues qualifies as one of the pianist's most enjoyable early discs." (Allmusic).

Inspiration (2002)

"Arriale is one of the most intellectual, introspective and insightful swingers on the current scene, bringing a flawless touch, an impeccable sense of complex rhythms and a harmonic curiosity to everything she attempts. Bernsteins America could easily be called Trinidad; A House Is Not a Home and The Nearness of You are so exquisite they make you want to cry; she can just as easily make you laugh with her playful, disjointed take on Monks Bemsha Swing. Chick Corea, The Spanish Heart Band Antidote (2019)

"De iconische pianist, componist en bandleider Chick Corea (1941) kan bogen op een kolossale staat van dienst. Hij was vaak winnaar van belangrijke muziektrofeeën (22 Grammy Awards!) en schiep een imposant platen- en cd-oeuvre. Veel mensen kennen hem door zijn verbintenis met Miles Davis op platen als In A Silent Way en Bitches Brew, maar ook op eigen kracht maakte hij grote indruk. Luister naar zijn legendarische plaat Now He Sings, Now He Sobs (1968)! Dave D'Angelo & Section 8 - In A Minute
CD

Dave D'Angelo & Section 8 - In A Minute (2000)

"Section 8 is a five-piece saxophone band loosely based on the famous LA Super Sax band that covered the music of Charlie Parker. This east-coast version was conceived by Dave DAngelo and is manned by his former band mates. All of the saxophonists here are Buddy Rich Big Band alumni. The harmonization of 2 altos, 2 tenors and a baritone saxophone is a formula for a hard-hitting session. The disc opens with tenors Walt Weiskopf and Steve Marcus mixing it up with true tenor madness. Weiskopf has been a perennial musicians choice for talent deserving wider recognition and Marcus has collaborated with Gary Burton and Stan Kenton. Altoists Andy Fusco and Dave DAngelo close the disc on the burning DAngelo original. The former sounding like Jackie McLean, the latter a bit smoother, like Frank Morgan. Section Eight answers the question: what are all those swinging cats from Buddy Richs band up to since the greatest big band drummer left this planet? They are still hittin hard."
