David Friedman (1944) is een Amerikaanse jazzpercussionist. In de jaren '60 maakte hij deel uit van de New York Philharmonic en het orkest van de Metropolitan Opera. Als jazzmusicus werkte hij in de jaren '70 met o.a. Wayne Shorter, Hubert Laws en Horace Silver. Op "Birds of a feather" vormde hij in 1998 een duo met Jasper van't Hof. "Friedman, Van't Hof und ihr hervorragendes Aufnahmeteam schaffen es, in dieser CD eine Menge musikalischer Gegensätze zu harmonisieren: Die Musik ist naturgemäß perkussiv, aber voller Kantabilität, voller Melodien. Die Spielhaltung wirkt einerseits entspannt, vibriert andererseits aber vor federnder Konzentration, und die musikalischen Inhalte entstehen wie beiläufig und sind dennoch voller Emotionen." "Judy Niemack is a gifted vocalist who moved to Europe to make her mark as a recording artist. Following a series of impressive releases for the now defunct Free Lance, she made this rewarding session for the German unit of Sony. Joined by an outstanding band that includes guitarist Jean Francois Prins (her husband), bassist Eddie Gomez, vibraphonist David Friedman, and percussionist Café, Niemack's wide-ranging choice of material and infectious voice keep things interesting, with many of the pieces having a "time" theme in their titles. She penned hopeful lyrics to Pat Metheny's "Talk Awhile" (originally titled "[It's Just] Talk") and delightfully scats in unison along with Prins and Friedman. Niemack's subtle arrangement of "Sometime Ago" is an object of beauty, while her playful side comes across in the sexy rendition of Cyndi Lauper's "Time After Time." "Because Dino Saluzzi is an Argentine who plays the bandoneon, it is inevitable to compare him to Astor Piazolla. This comparison is unfair, however, because if Saluzzi is playing tango, it is so abstracted and transformed that we may as well just call it jazz. (...) On Rios, Saluzzi plays with American bassist Anthony Cox and American vibist and arranger David Friedman, a musician who's run the gamut from Yoko Ono to Disney soundtracks. Together they play an assortment of tunes by members of the group, about half of them Saluzzi's, plus the one cover "My One and Only Love." The numbers are thoughtful but not flashy. Friedman's "Penta y Uno" is largely a deconstruction of bossa nova and tango, featuring percussion as well as vibes. Cox's "Jad" uses weird effects from the instruments and the occasional Arabic motif to build up to a subdued bop frenzy. Other tracks are more straight-ahead combinations of the primary instruments".
