Tana Mana (1987)

"Tana Mana is an album by Indian musician Ravi Shankar, originally credited to "the Ravi Shankar Project" and released in 1987. The album is an experimental work by Shankar, mixing traditional instrumentation with 1980s electronic music and sampling technology. Shankar recorded much of Tana Mana in 1983 with sound effects innovator Frank Serafine, but it remained unreleased until Peter Baumann, head of new age record label Private Music, became attached to the project. The album title translates to mean "body and mind". In addition to his familiar instrument, the sitar, Shankar plays synthesizer extensively on the recording. The album also includes contributions from Lakshmi Shankar, Aashish Khan and Kumar Bose, and Western musicians such as George Harrison, Al Kooper and Ray Cooper." (Wikipedia)

Concerto For Sitar And Orchestra

Concerto For Sitar And Orchestra (1971)

The Concerto for Sitar and Orchestra is entertaining, engaging and enlightening. It is an amazing banter between the sitar and all the different instruments of the orchestra. It is a demonstration of the depth and breadth of the sitar and Ravi Shankar's skill. It likewise highlights the disciplined skill of the orchestra musicians. (bron: Amazon)

Three Ragas (1956)

In 1956 uitgebracht als eerste langspeelplaat van Ravi Shankar, in 2000 digitaal geremasterd en opnieuw uitgebracht door Angel Records. "Perhaps Ravi Shankar's finest World Pacific record, Three Ragas is not only a fantastic artistic statement, but also an excellent introduction to the medium of Indian music itself. Performed by Shankar and a very simple trio, the pieces on this record show the true heart of Indian music at its most intimate. The second side, "Raga Jog," will take your breath away. A showcase in Indian ensemble performing as well as in Shankar's own endurance and grace, this side truly shows why he has been called (by David Crosby, no less) the finest musician on the planet". (Matthew Greenwald, Allmusic).

Menuhin meets Shankar
CD

Menuhin meets Shankar (1968)

In Portrait (2002)

"It is almost impossible to condense anyone's life into three hours, let alone that of an iconic artist, so three cheers to BBC Opus Arte for this 2DVD set. "Between Two Worlds" is a substantial 10-part documentary, telling the sitar player's life story up to his 80th birthday celebrations in 2000. The film is littered with archive footage, including the young Shankar performing with his brother's dance troupe, an emotional reunion with his teacher and guru Baba Allauddin Khan, and his celebrated collaborations with musicians such as Yehudi Menuhin and The Beatles. The second part features Shankar performing with a group of Indian musicians, including his daughter Anoushka, at the Union Chapel in London, 2002. The atmosphere and the intimacy of the performance is well captured. A 19-minute introduction to Indian music and the sitar, delivered by Shankar, rounds off the set. The booklet provides a useful introduction to Shankar as well as biographies of his fellow performers." (Rebecca Agnew, Amazon)
