James MacMillan is een componist die zich laat inspireren door de Schotse en Keltische cultuur en het katholieke geloof. Vanaf september 2010 is hij verbonden als vaste gastdirigent aan de Radio Kamer Filharmonie. De samenwerking heeft inmiddels geresulteerd in het eerste deel van een cd-reeks rond MacMillan, uitgebracht door Challenge. De titel van het openingswerk – A Deep but Dazzling Darkness – is ontleend aan een gedicht van de 17e eeuwse dichter Henry Vaughan. Met zijn symboliek van licht en donker spreekt dit gedicht de taal van de mystiek. MacMillan zou echter MacMillan niet zijn wanneer hij deze vrome bewoordingen niet dramatiseerde. Zo legt hij een verband met het lijden van de Bijbelse Job, die (volgens MacMillan) de patroonheilige van de muziek zou zijn geweest voordat St. Cecilia in de picture was. ‘Like Michael Tippett, I have long believed in the mysterious connections between compassion and music, and this has provided the central impetus for this work’, aldus de componist. Met o.a. een arrangement voor marimba van Ravels "Alborada del gracioso", dat 18-1-2011 door het Joint Venture Percussion Duo in het Muziekcentrum in Enschede wordt vertolkt. "The young Scottish percussionist, Colin Currie first came to prominence in 1992 when he won the prestigious Shell/LSO scholarship at the age of only 16. In choosing the title 'Striking a Balance" for his Debut CD, Currie seems to signal a middle-of-the-road approach to contemporary music, mixing jazz-inspired pieces by Chick Corea and Richard Michael with soft-edged new music from Toshi lchiyanagi and Steve Reich. "Striking a Balance" also suggests the intimate, chambermusic feel, away from the soloistic glamour of Evelyn Glennie's discs. Not that this is a fault, but the considerable virtuosity is hidden to all but the most knowledgeable of listeners. Currie's duos with Sam Walton (marimba) and Robin Michael (piano) are finely 'balanced' and yet so virtuosic. (...) A well-thought-out and beautifully recorded album." (Gramophone, 1998)
