Hudson (2017)

"Too often, musicians of this caliber who come together for a "project" find the result muddied by difficulties, from ego things to production excesses. Thankfully, none of that is the case with this recording by the all-star, multi-generational quartet of drummer Jack DeJohnette, bassist Larry Grenadier, keyboardist John Medeski, and guitarist John Scofield. The album title signifies the geographical region in upstate New York where these players currently reside, ánd highlights the notion that the area has always offered a place of solace for artists -- especially musicians. The latter is reflected in the choice of covers here. The mood throughout is loose and conversational. These guys play songs they love to discover what else is inside them. Hudson is a modern update that harkens back - in feel - to the great Blue Note sessions of the '60s, when a group of jazz masters could come together to play good music and let off some steam. We need more records like this." (Thom Jurek, Allmusic; 3,5 uit 5 sterren)

The song project Live at Le Poisson Rouge (2015)

A live concert version of Zorns acclaimed song project! In celebration of his 60th birthday, Zorn asked his most acclaimed vocal collaborators to write lyrics to select compositions from his vast musical catalog. Including music originally written for Naked City, Masada, The Dreamers, a variety of film soundtracks and more, "The Song Project" is a retrospective of some of Zorn's most lyrical compositions from the past 25 years. This CD presents an all-star band performing live in New York after a dozen European concerts and at the peak of their powers. Electricity is in the air from first note to last! (bron: Tzadik)

Juice (2014)

"The third studio meeting in 17 years between MM&W and Scofield has no easy referent to their earlier recordings - purposely. This quartet sounds like a real band now, which is a mixed blessing. The positive aspect is that this longtime collaboration creates near instinctive communication. This is a much more inside date. There are 4 covers from the 1960s scattered among the various originals; some work better than others. One is "Sham Time," an Eddie Harris tune. The obvious inspiration, though, is Willie Bobo's version from the 1968 album A New Dimension. This quartet does it justice with spark, crackle, groove, and grease. The cultural baggage associated with the Doors' "Light My Fire" is too great for even these musicians to transcend, and with a straight rock chart, it feels tossed off. Conversely, the reading of Cream's "Sunshine of Your Love," at nearly 11 minutes, contains an imaginative rocksteady arrangement that makes the listener almost forget the original." Inferno (2015)

The third CD from Zorns most dangerous new instrumental ensemble is inspired by the work and thought of Swedish playwright, poet, painter, philosopher, novelist, alchemist and occultist August Strindberg, whose dark brooding visions were a precursor to expressionism, surrealism and more. Featuring the long form composition Inferno, named after one of Srindbergs most startling texts, the music touches upon metal, jazz, minimalism, atonality, ambient and more. White hot burning intensity from the mind of downtown NYs eternally youthful hell-raiser performed by a virtuoso trio forged from the worlds of jazz and metal. (bron: Tzadik)

Spinoza (2022)

"This latest effort from John Zorn?s organ-metal trio Simulacrum features 2 long tracks, "Immanence" showcasing guitarist Bill Frisell and the title track as a vehicle for Zorn himself. Simulacrum consists of John Medeski on organ and technical-metal wizards Kenny Grohowski and Matt Hollenberg on drums and electric guitar, respectively. "Immanence" keeps with the general Simulacrum style: complex riffing and runs are punctuated by chaotic breaks and softer interludes. Even in the more energetic passages where Frisell employs distortion, he maintains a distinct spikiness harkening to jazz and rock rather than extreme metal. "Spinoza" begins with Zorn?s signature disjointed lines, including a long, piercing high-pitched blast, joined by heaviness from the trio. The track is a vehicle for soloing, with Zorn, Medeski, and Hollenberg trading leads. When the tempo slows, Zorn?s playing remains edgy. "Spinoza" shines when Zorn relents a bit and engages in a soaring solo over a pounding metal riff." (Avantmusicnews)|

Dreamachines (2013)

"This set closely mirrors "Nova Express" (2011), employing the same band: John Medeski (p), Trevor Dunn (b), Kenny Wollesen (vib), and Joey Baron (d). Zorn offers some freer improvisational jazz pieces by the set bookends, "Psychic Conspirators" and "The Wild Boys," the former driven by speedy, demanding work by Wollesen, the latter with deft, free-thinking piano by Medeski. The crystalline "The Dream Machine" and the atmospheric "Git-le-Coeur" resemble the Dreamers projects. The spacious and tentative "Light Chapels" and the knotty, arpeggiated exploration in "Note Virus" are more angular and classical in character. Finally, he references the Jewish and Middle Eastern folk melodies and modalism performed by some of the groups assembled to play his Masada composition books in the exotic "The Conqueror Worm" and "1001 Nights in Marrakech." "Dreamachines" does vary widely in terms of style, but Zorn is a magician when it comes to creating compositional, dynamic, and textural balances." (Thom Jurek, Allmusic)

Can You Feel It? (2005)
