"Het verhaal is bekend. Begin 1957 wordt John Coltrane uit de band van Miles Davis gezet vanwege zijn heroïneverslaving. Het zet de saxofonist aan het denken. Hij vertrekt naar zijn ouderlijk huis waar hij zich een paar weken laat opsluiten om af te kicken. Een herboren Coltrane keert terug naar New York waar hij, tot zijn dood 10 jaar later, een gedisciplineerde en spirituele muzikale reis begint. Blue Train, dat in september 1957 wordt opgenomen en begin 1958 verschijnt, is zijn eerste belangrijke album. Het is het enige album dat hij opneemt voor Blue Note, met een fantastische gelegenheidsband, bestaande uit o.a. de ritmesectie van Miles Davis. Blue Train is nog diepgeworteld in de hard bop en klinkt 65 jaar later onverminderd fris en geïnspireerd. De extra cd met afgekeurde takes voegt daar weinig aan toe, maar Blue Train blijft een essentieel fundament van het invloedrijke en onuitwisbare oeuvre dat Coltrane opbouwde gedurende de veel te korte tijd die hem nog gegund was." 'Late in his career, Ben Webster recorded a series of concerts at the famed Jazzhus in Copenhagen. They are all quite inspired and memorable, not only because of Webster's unmistakable sound and lyrical sensitivity, but because of the rhythm section that backed him up on these dates. Pianist Kenny Drew (the only other American in the group), bassist Nils-Henning Orsted-Pederson, and drummer Alex Riel all shine on this CD'. (AllMusic).
De Amerikaanse hardboppianist kwam in 1963 in Kopenhagen wonen, alwaar hij tot zijn dood, 30 jaar later, zou blijven. Hij was daar een zeer succesvol jazzartiest en werkte vaak samen met de legendarische jazzbassist Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen. Op deze 1974-opnamen wordt het duo bijgestaan door drummer Albert Heath, die met zijn broers Jimmy en Percy de behoorlijk legendarische Heath Brothers vormde.
"Although rather brief in length with just five tracks, this lively date has some strengths. The trumpeter turns over the solo spotlight to the extraordinary bassist Niels Pedersen and pianist Kenny Drew, prior to featuring himself in brief spurts with drum breaks by Kenny Clarke. Pedersen's fine arco technique introduces the brief ballad "I Waited for You," in which Gillespie is clearly at the top of his game. His muted horn saunters over Clarke's crisp brushwork during "Girl of My Dreams," although the overlong Latin original "Fiesta Mojo" quickly grows tiresome, in spite of a guest appearance by tenor saxophonist Johnny Griffin. Drew contributed the lush ballad "Serenity," which closes the CD. It's obvious that Dizzy Gillespie's chops are just starting to slip at this point in his career, but fans of his work will want to pick up this enjoyable reissue, as Gillespie at 90 percent is far more listenable than many well-known trumpeters at 100 percent." "Johnny Griffin had already been living in Europe for 16 years by the time of this club date with fellow expatriate Kenny Drew, along with bassist Jens Melgaard and drummer Ole Streenberg, and the hard-blowing tenor saxophonist enjoys stretching out on a set that primarily features standards. An explosive "Just Friends" opens the evening, followed by a loping and very long (but never dull) "If I Should Lose You." The Danish folk song "Hush-a-Bye," which was also a favorite of fellow tenor saxophonist Stan Getz, is heard in an arrangement that Griffin co-wrote with frequent collaborator Niels-Henning Orsted Pedersen. Griffin's up-tempo "Slukefter Blues" sounds like a perfect set closer, but there's more to come with a dreamy treatment of the lovely ballad "Isfahan" and the blazing, somewhat squawking treatment of Thelonious Monk's "Rhythm-a-Ning." "Go" uit 1962 wordt alom hét ultieme Dexter Gordon-album genoemd. Dit was de plaat daarvoor, verschenen in 1961, en die doet daar weinig voor onder. Met een andere groep, maar ook met topnamen (Kenny Drew (piano), Paul Chambers (bas) en Philly Joe Jones (drums). Het mooie van Gordon is dat hij sfeervolle ballads, gespeeld met een melancholieke toon, zo heerlijk kan afwisselen met vol-energetische nummers waar hij graag zo af en toe wat lekker expres lelijk-smerige noten doorheen mag blazen. Bijzonder plezierige hardbop.
