"Miles Davis was in the process of forming his first classic quintet when he recorded this date, a Prestige set reissued in 2008. The trumpeter is featured on a quartet outing with pianist Red Garland, bassist Oscar Pettiford, and drummer Philly Joe Jones, playing four standards plus a blues ("Green Haze") and "I Didn't," his answer to Thelonious Monk's "Well, You Needn't." Garland and Jones would soon be in Miles' group, although the fiery Pettiford proved too difficult for the trumpeter to handle and was quickly succeeded by Paul Chambers. De toen pas ontwikkelde hardbopstijl (minder freaky, lyrischer en toegankelijker dan op zo spetterend mogelijke soli gerichte bebop) wordt toegepast op een aantal Davis-originals, een Great American Songbook -musicallied ("It Never Entered My Mind") en bekende stukken van tijdgenoten (o.a. "Ahmad's Blues" van Ahmad Jamal). "As is often the case with an artist as prolific as John Coltrane, not every release can be considered as essential. Black Pearls seems a bit ambiguous when placed in a more historical context. It was only three days later that Coltrane participated not as a leader, but rather a member, of the Miles Davis Sextet that recorded "Stella By Starlight" and "On Green Dolphin Street." There is an obvious disparity between these three mostly improvised and lengthy jams and the Davis session. This is in no way to insinuate that Coltrane's performance is anything less than par. Black Pearls indeed captures Coltrane at the height of perfecting the intense volley that would garner the name "sheets of sound." Featuring Donald Byrd (trumpet) and the Red Garland Trio -- Garland (piano), Paul Chambers (bass), and Art Taylor (drums) -- this is the same quintet that had mightily contributed to "Lush Life" and "The Believers", as well as The "Last Trane". "Het moet geweldig zijn geweest, die zaterdagnacht 27 september 1958 in het Concertgebouw. Er waren 2 toppianisten, Phineas Newborn en Red Garland. De tovenaar uit Memphis en de aardsere klavierleeuw uit Dallas. Newborn woonde stilistisch in hetzelfde blok als Bud Powell, Erroll Garner en Horace Silver. Hij heeft het briljante, zonder dat nadrukkelijke, van Oscar Peterson. Garland speelt elementairder, heeft minder noten nodig en als hij zijn argumenten kracht bij wil zetten, gebruikt hij blokakkoorden. Ook de blazers laten mooie contrasten horen. Altist Lee Konitz is cooler dan de meeste boppers uit die tijd. De warmbloediger Zoot Sims (ts) vormt een fraai contrast. Nochtans speelt hij een stuk lichter dan generatiegenoten als Lockjaw Davis of Sonny Rollins. Bassist Oscar Pettiford levert met 2 solo features, zijn eigen 'Bohemia After Dark' en 'Stardust', indrukwekkende voorbeelden van hoe je jazzbas moet spelen.
