"De eerste plaat van John Scofield voor weer actieve label Impulse! is behalve erg fraai ook wat droevig. De aanleiding voor de gitarist om het kwartet waarmee hij in de jaren 90 werkte weer bij elkaar te roepen, was de dood van zijn zoon, die in 2013 aan kanker stierf. Het inspireerde hem behalve tot de fraaie blues "Mr. Puffy" tot acht andere stukken waarin Scofield lijkt terug te grijpen naar de muziek uit zijn eigen jeugd. Teder en toch swingend verwijst de gitarist naar oude country- en blueswijsjes en komt er ook een beetje soul-jazz voorbij. De hernieuwde samenwerking met drummer Bill Stewart en vooral tenorsaxofonist Joe Lovano pakt erg goed uit. Fraai zijn de unisono partijen tussen gitaar en saxofoon. Lovano met mooi zwevende noten en Scofield met zijn ingehouden melancholieke spel. Het geluid is semi-akoestisch, met ook een voorname rol voor de nieuwkomer hier, Larry Grenadier. "Few artistic partnerships are as delightfully durable as the trio of organist Larry Goldings, guitarist Peter Bernstein, and drummer Bill Stewart. "Ramshackle Serenade" finds this group covering a lot of ground. The album opens with Goldings' "Roach" a slow blues in five which proves to be one of the standout performances. Goldings and Bernstein both cook while Stewart masterfully slices up the time in endlessly inventive ways. The trio then visits Brazilian territory with Jobim's "Luiza". The title track is all about rubato rumination, as Goldings and Bernstein paint melodies while Stewart lightly colors in the background. Goldings' "Mr. Meagles" is a great example of the way this trio manages to create music that speaks relatively softly and carries a mean groove. "Sweet And Lovely" grows hotter over time, followed by a pair of originals and an album-closing look at Horace Silver's "Peace." After all these years, this trio still manages to make magic." "Guitarist Peter Bernstein, organist Larry Goldings and drummer Bill Stewart have been playing together for many years, holding down a regular gig at the Smalls jazz club when their schedules allow. This is a nice example of their regular gig, beginning with Chant" which shows the trio playing in a mellow laid back groove, with the organ bubbling and simmering like a thick stew. The highlight of the performance is a performance of the classic Miles Davis standard Milestones" beginning with science fiction/Sun Ra sounding organ effects, Bernstein takes the lead with a pithy statement of the familiar melody and builds upon it along with a strong fast organ led groove section. There is a spacious interlude for Stewart's drums, developing a loud soft dynamic before a restatement of the melody and conclusion. This is a solid group, interacting and listening to each other closely, creating solid mainstream jazz through communicating and dialogue development." (Tim Niland, Music And More)
DVD uit 2006 met live-opnamen uit 1992. In de tijd (eind jaren tachtig, begin jaren negentig) zat de gitarist misschien wel op z'n creatieve piek. Met Pat Metheny en Bill Frisell vormde hij de top van de licht moderne jazzgitaristen en 'een nieuwe Scofield' was altijd weer een belevenis. Hier speelt de groep die te horen is op het album "What We Do" in vrije, spannende en vlammende moderne jazz, waarbij de vier spelers elkaar constant uitdagen. Saxofonist Joe Lovano krijgt hierbij minstens zoveel soloruimte als Scofield.
Fraai zijn de 3 tracks met Elvin Jones achter de drumkit: zijn boeiende, levendige ritmiek geeft de band, met o.a. gitarist Pat Metheny 'a kick in the ass'. Ondanks het romige geluid dat organist Larry Goldings aan het geheel geeft had iets meer vuurwerk op de rest van de plaat zo nu en dan geen kwaad gekund - ondanks het feit dat Brecker soms wel degelijk de hoge regionen opzoekt en tot het gaatje blaast.
