De legendarische, ultra-vingervlugge gitarist John McLaughlin, bekend van o.a. Mahavishnu Orchestra, is de uitsmijter op 't jaarlijkse Gronau Jazzfest 2010. Zondag 25 april speelt McLaughlin met zijn jazzrockgroep 4th Dimension net over de grens. De band is hetzelfde als op deze in 2008 in Belgrado opgenomen DVD: John McLaughlin (gitaar), Dominique Di Piazza (bas), Mark Mondesir (drums), Gary Husband (keyboards & drums). Husband, als drummer bekend van o.a. Level 42 en Allan Holdsworth, speelt voornamelijk toetsen in deze bezetting, maar tijdens de climax van het concert zorgt hij (staand!) voor extra drumpartijen, bovenop het spel van de al ultra-energieke Mondesir. Hij levert ook een van de meest melodieuze stukken aan, "Sully", waarin hij z'n toetsenvaardigheid ook overtuigend kan etaleren. Als geheel laat het concert wel wat weinig melodie horen: McLaughlin speelt vooral razendsnel, maar zelden weet te raken met een gevoelvolle frase. Indrukwekkend is dit zeker;r Mahavishnu-tijden worden niet geëvenaard.
"Courtney Pine's second album stays very much within the Marsalis-imposed boundaries of post-Miles post-bop; indeed, a Marsalis brother, Delfeayo, is the producer, and the album's subtitle uses the patented kind of wordplay that the New Orleans dynasty indulges in. As before, Pine's guiding star is John Coltrane, of whom he had become a fervent and skillful acolyte, tossing off endless streams of heated playing on tenor and soprano inside and outside. Pine also uses alternating expert teams of English acoustic jazz specialists -- Julian Joseph or Joe Bashorun on piano, Paul Hunt or Gary Crosby on bass, and Mark Mondesir on drums -- as backup. There are some really good Pine compositions here; "Sacrifice" sounds as if it could have made it as a standard in mainstream and/or electric jazz. Although the novelty of a young black Englishman playing Afro-American acoustic jazz has long since worn off, much of this CD repays repeated latter-day listening." (Allmusic)
"Hoewel Pilc al eens hyperactief uit de hoek komt, racet hij niet zomaar over het klavier of beukt hij niet zomaar met blokakkoorden op de luisteraar in. Het nerveuze zit voornamelijk in de opbouw van zijn muziek. Dit begint al bij het thema, dat hij graag voorziet van ritmische hoeken of dissonante omkadering, waardoor het herkenbare meteen verbrokkelt. Wanneer hij aan het soleren slaat, gaat Pilc nog wat verder. Een muzikaal idee kan bij hem obsessief herhaald worden, maar voor hij aan de uitwerking ervan toe is, zit hij al ergens anders. Bovendien citeert hij graag uit het jazzrepertoire, alsof één stuk tegelijkertijd niet genoeg is. De meest typerende track van "Live At Iridum" is "Ignition", dat vertrekt vanuit een obsessieve riedel en alle typische Pilc-dada's bevat. Die vormen de basis voor een heel eigen muzikale benadering en belevenis." (Kwadratuur.be)
