"After the death of Coltrane, while there were many seeking to make a spiritual music that encompassed his ideas; no one came up with the goods until Sanders on this 1969 date. There are only 2 tracks: the 32-plus minute "The Creator Has a Master Plan" and the 5 1/2-minute "Colours." "Creator" begins with a quote from "A Love Supreme," a nod to Coltrane. But something else emerges here as well: Sanders' own deep commitment to lyricism and his now inherent knowledge of Eastern breathing and modal techniques. At 18 minutes it explodes, rushing into a silence that is profound as it is noisy in its approach. Sanders is playing microphonics and blowing to the heavens and Thomas is screaming. They are leaving the material world entirely. When they arrive at the next plane, a new kind of lyricism emerges. There is nothing to describe the exhilaration that is felt when this tune ends, except that "Colours" was the only track that could follow it. You cannot believe it until you hear it." Opvolger van het veelbejubelde "The Sidewinder" (1963), van even hoog niveau. Niet voor niets krijgen beide albums op allmusic de maximale 5-sterren-waardering. Op drummer Billy Higgins na is de bezetting compleet veranderd en hoe! Meewerkenden zijn nu Wayne Shorter (ts), Grant Green (g), Herbie Hancock (p) en Reggie Workman (b). Vooral Shorter, Green en Hancock krijgen veel ruimte om hun veelgeroemde creativiteit te botvieren. Het album opent met het opvallend impressionistische, bijna 16 minuten lange "Search For A New Land": de musici zijn hier veel aan het kleuren, aan het sfeertekenen. De overige vier stukken passen beter in de mainstream hardbop-mode van die tijd, maar zoeken op een prettige wijze de grenzen daarvan op. Toenmalig opnametechnicus Rudy van Gelder zorgde er in 2003 zelf voor dat het album top notch de nieuwe eeuw in gaat.
"Japanese koto wonder Miya Masaoka teams up with bassist Reggie Workman and drummer Andrew Cyrille for a set of originals, traditional tunes, and -- as indicated in the title -- Monk numbers. The koto is a harp that has existed in Japan since antiquity. Masaoka is first and foremost a folk musician and an improviser; her jazz leanings inform them both. Her command of the jazz and improvisational idioms here is total. She is unquestionably the bandleader, despite the lofty, well-deserved reputations of her accomplices. The set closes with a tribute piece, the seven-minute "Monk's Sigh in July," a deeply meditative piece reflecting the elongated modal motifs in Monk's mature work with Columbia and even Black Lion when he was reinventing himself once again. It's a bit smarmy in how obvious it is, but it is also an ingenious use of drone against harmony and a deft methodology for creating open improvisational space. This disc is a winner." (Allmusic)

"Duke Jordan, who played regularly with the Charlie Parker Quintet in 1947, has long been known as a superior bebop pianist whose style was touched by the genius of Bud Powell's innovations. This quintet album (which also features trumpeter Dizzy Reece and the young tenor Stanley Turrentine) gave Jordan an opportunity to record six of his originals and, although none became as well-known as his "Jordu," the music has plenty of strong melodies and variety. This is one of Duke Jordan's better recordings and is quite enjoyable. This is Blue Note's 2007 remastered CD reissue, that includes "Diamond Stud" and "I Should Care" as bonus tracks." Zijn debuut voor het Impulse!-label, uit 1961, met Eric Dolphy-arrangementen voor jazz-ensemble, dat Dolphy ook zelf dirigeert. Dit ensemble begeleidt als het ware Coltrane's kwartet (de legendarische bezetting met pianist McCoy Tyner en drummer Elvin Jones, maar nog met Reggie Workman als bassist i.p.v. Jimmy Garrison). Kant één bevat het spannende en enerverende "Afrika", de tweede helft opent met een bloedstollend mooie versie van de traditional "Greensleeves", Coltrane's favoriete folkmelodie. De koperorkestarrangementen in "Africa" en "Greensleeves" hebben een Gil Evans-achtige kleur (denk met name aan "Will-O-The-Wisp" van "Sketches Of Spain" als referentie). "Blues Minor" verkeert qua basis in traditionelere bigband- en bopsferen, maar in Coltrane's spel is die fabuleuze stijl en diepe intensiteit die later o.a. in "A Love Supreme" is te horen grotendeels aanwezig.
Coltrane was het grote voorbeeld voor deze saxofonist en hij is ook z'n coach op deze 1964-plaat: een klassieker der sixtiesjazz en sleutelplaat in Shepp's oeuvre. Vergelijkbaar met Coltrane's werk van toen, doch wel met meer blueswortels.
"Originally released by Strata East as Live at the Loosdrecht Jazz Festival, this CD reissue features the great but very underrated trumpeter Charles Tolliver in a quartet with pianist John Hicks, bassist Reggie Workman and drummer Alvin Queen. The group performs three of the leader's songs plus Cowell's "Prayer for Peace" and Neal Hefti's "Repetition"; the lengthy renditions clock in between 11 and 17 minutes apiece. Tolliver's music (which holds on to one's attention throughout the live set) has its connections to the bebop tradition but also forges ahead and can be quite passionate. Recommended."
"Elvin Jones will always be best-known for his association with the classic John Coltrane Quartet (1960-1965) but he also had a notable career as a bandleader and continued to be a major influence in music. One of the all-time great drummers (bridging the gap between advanced hard bop and the avant-garde), Jones is the younger brother of a remarkable musical family that also includes Hank and Thad Jones. He went on a European tour with the Duke Ellington Orchestra and then started leading his own groups, which in the '90s became known as Elvin Jones' Jazz Machine. He remained active well into the 2000s and continued to push himself musically with the Jazz Machine, inviting young lions into the fold and touring regularly."(Allmusic)
"For this inspired 1994 date, veteran bassist Reggie Workman assembled four fellow avant-garde luminaries: pianist Andrew Hill, saxophonist Sam Rivers, trombonist Julian Priester, and drummer Pheeroan akLaff. By the usual standards of these highly adventurous players, the record is relatively accessible, but it does makes for challenging listening. The quintet opens with "Encounter," a busy and bold selection by the late John Carter. Overall, only Workman's "Summit Conference" and Priester's "Breath" feature sustained periods of cacophony, yet even these freer pieces are built around a defined melody and structure. Sonelius Smith's "Conversation" and Rivers' "Solace" bump along with Latin rhythms; Priester shines on both tracks. The trombonist is also the dominant voice on Rivers' fast-swinging "Meteor." Rivers plays soprano sax on Workman's "Estelle's Theme" and flute on Hill's "Gone," the latter a duet with Hill that closes the session on an austere yet calming note." (David R. Adler, Allmusic)
